CAMA? l'lf' .rw A z QM FFA and FHA Choose Sweetheart Bachelor The Sweetheart Dance, sponsored by the FFA and FHA, was held after the last basket- ball game of the season. FHA chose the Bachelor and FFA chose the Sweetheart. Unlike past years, the Sweetheart was chosen just from among FFA members. This was because the Sweetheart has to attend FFA functions and must have some knowledge of what FFA is all about. The Bachelor, Sam Dilettoso, a junior, was chosen for the quality of the cherry pie which he made. All Bachelor candidates had to make a pie. Fortunately for Sam, his turned out the best. The Sweetheart was Nancy Bango, a sophomore. During her reign as Sweetheart, she will attend the FFA Banquet and compete with other Sweethearts for the State title. Top Picture: The candidates await the announcement of who will win the title of Bachelor and Sweetheart. Right: Sam Dilettoso and Nancy Bango pose in front of their respective titles. Economic conditions were still bad as inflation climbed, unemployment lingered around 92, and prices soared on many items. Vice President Nelson Rockefeller, former Governor of New York, dropped out of the 1976 political race. Although he gave no specific reason, politicians speculated that it was to prevent dissention in the GOP party and to free President Ford to pick a more acceptable running mate. In November President Ford fired CIA Director William Colby and Defense Secretary James R. Schlesinger. George Bush succeeded Colby and Donald Rumsfeld replaced Schlesinger. Loves, friendships, good times and sad times...they were all a part of our life. Snack-bar smiles, dances, going to the VI after the games, and playing buck-buck at lunch were some of the best times of our life. l F' 'arf Q f we--1 'l l ru-1 ll The campus was brigtened up by the painting of the garbage cans. And we'Il probably never forget braving the early morning winter to pick up report cards. And above all, we'll always see the Panther, mascot of PHS, representing all we worked for. Being the kind of person that gets involved, she became Student Body Historian and was chosen for Model U.N. She carried this involvement over to her senior year by being elected Senior Class President and becoming a member of the Annual Staff. Lisa graduated at the semester break. She kept herself busy by working and going to Scottsdale Community College. She returned to Peoria in May to deliver her speech at graduation exercises. Lisa was chosen as Valedictorian on the basis of her grade point average, which was 1.0. When asked about her plans for the future, Lisa replied, I'm going to go to England to become a Horse Nlaster, then come back and get married someday. Lisa has always been a horse lover so it was almost inevitable that she wanted to go into a field that dealt with horses. Jim Collins, left, was chosen as co-salutatorian along with Jeff McKenzie, below. They were tied for second place out of the entire senior class, each with a grade average of 1.029. Both were involved in sports and clubs throughout their high school years. Jim was in Student Council since he was a sophomore and was Student Body President his senior year. He was in football all four years and in baseball his sophomore and senior years. He was an active leader in everything he joined. After high school Jim plans to go to the University of Colorado. When asked what he'd miss most about high school, Jim said, Not being able to bug teachers, the friendly atmos- phere and the excitement of the library. .Jeff was active in baseball and basketball all four years. He was chosen to attend Boys' State and was President of Interact his senior year. Jeff had many interests, one of which was cars. He like to fix them, take them apart and whatever else needed to be done on them. What will I miss most? That's easy, said Jeff. After tr outs in A ril the new line had to get organ Y P ' ized. Then in May, they attendedaworkshop atA.S.U. along with other schools from all over Arizona. They then competed against these schools and incidentally, our Poms 84 Cheers left with the most awards given to one school. In July, they attended a cheer camp at N.A.U. There they received a couple more awards to add to their growing pile. But it isn't all fun and games. These girls practiced at 7 o'clock every morning during the year. It is very hard to practice two-bits when you're all snoring! But it's the thought that counts and the Cheers' hard work was appreciated by everyone. Interact Activities Enhance School Interact is one of the more active clubs at Peoria. They are interested in not only working for the school but in also helping the community. As of now, they're working on building a barbeque pit for the school out by the pool. In November many new members were added to the club. To become a member you had to fill out an appli- cation, be interviewed, and then voted on by the club. For their next project, they plan on going to Mexico. Student Council Active Throughout Year Student Council was once again involved in activities throughout the year. There were quite a few things that Student Council sponsored. For instance, at the beginning of the year they held the Student Mixer. Instead of having a live band, they had a disc jockey come out from a local radio station and play re- cords. This turned out to be a great success. So much so that quite a few clubs had record hops . Student Council also spon- sored the Carnival and Home- coming. During the year they tried to impress upon the students that they should keep our campus clean. The art department, work- ing on this principle, painted trash cans that really add to the school's landscape. Student Council also sponsored the Band The Bridge to come out and play. Students were in- vited to bring their lunches to old gym during either first or second lunch to hear them. Since the band plays for free, the Student Council offered to help pay for their traveling expenses. Student Council Members: Left Row: D. Pickering, T. Thomas, M. Bango, L. Whitehurst, L. During football season the Mat Maids greeted people at the gates while taking tickets and handing out programs. After the game, refreshments were pro- vided in the lobby of the new gym. It was a moving experience. Even at most of the away meets there was at least one Mat Rat to cheer them on. Their uniforms were gold tops and skirts. At the big PHS Invitational, The Mat Maids made many signs as well as working for stretches of seven hours b straight. They did a very good job and stayed alert and, most of the time, in good spirits. Our girls were commended very highly by several of the other school's wrestling coaches. Last but not least, the Mat Maids worked at all the home track meets, keeping score and timing, as well as helping to set up the equipment. Our Mat Maids are a big part of Peoria High. Peoria's Provocative Pep Club Pep Club this year was a big part of the teams' support. Mrs. Detrie, Mrs. Robertson, and Mrs. Cupell were sponsors, with Leslie Sanders as President. The girls were at every game, cheering and making noise. They had a booth at the Carnival where they sold fudge and cookies. The money they raised went to buying patches given at the end of the year to active members. They sold pennants and football pins during the year also. They made posters for sports events which also gave them points toward their patches. Pep Club is open to both girls and boys, and the membership this year was huge! Back Row: C. Hoopes, C. Holly, T. Both coaches Feist and Mangin stressed the fundamentals and encouraged their players to reach team goals rather than individual goals. The-ir record was 7-2-1, and they placed fifth in the Skyline Divisionals, which is better than many other schools expected from them. Coach Bob Gonzalo did a remarkable job with his young grapplers tthere were only four seniors on the squadl. He feels the team gained a lot of experience and hopes to be in contention for the Division Title next year. Coach Gonzalo was assisted by Coach Mike Koury. Ruben Chagolla placed first at the Di- visionals, Tony Santa Cruz, Mike Kay and Eliseo Murillo all received a second. Tito Castro finished with a third. Their record was 5-5, but this was due to the fact that they were short on wrestlers. Before a match started, they were behind by 18 points. Their coach, Denny Vicars, was mainly concerned with simply preparing them for Varsity competition. He felt all of them improved significantly at the e d of the season. Then there's Mrs. Justesen. She's in charge of organizing all those lunches. She's the one who has to put up with those cafeteria jokes. No one appreciates her as much as she deserves it. Seeing the finished project makes you forget the personallity conflicts, lack of pictures, and missed deadlines. the tears I'd like to thank Mr. Edmund Tang for supplying us with the fantastic old pictures of Peoria that we used of thedivision pages. I'd like to also thank Mr. Ron Hildreth and the photography staff for working with us and for giving us the pictures that make this book so special. Working close together with other people is sure to bring on conflicts. But somehow we overcame them. I'd like to thank those on the staff who stayed with it. They all worked hard and did a great job. I'd also like to thank them for putting up with my hysterical fits and for working so good together. Most of my thanks and admiration goes to Mrs. Peggy Hudson, our advisor. She was always there to listen calmly to my complaining and worrying. She kept us going, making sure that we made those deadlines. Without her we never would have made it. in 'Q'1!4'i'i., W. fv- J I .ul-. ,f 'GE sun ge ns from'God sunset -, 1' - --f-Y -i-.3 fx. Q, 1 .
