Sponsored by the student council, its purpose was to give clubs and classes a chance to earn money. The Juniors turned out to be the biggest money earners. The Seniors, however, won the King and Queen competition, thus placing Loa Johnson and Justin Smith on the thrown as the new Carnival King and Queen. The Carnival supplied lots of fun for both those who attended and those who worked in it. 1 1 1 ANRJ if Q ,. Trick Or Treat Sets Theme Homecoming 74-75 was altered by the rain that persisted all week long. Floats were built in barns or garages. The band couldn't march at halftime and the Queen candidates had to walk onto the field on a path of boards. But this by no means affected Homecoming. The theme was Trick or Treat, a funny coincidence, seeing as Home- coming fell on Halloween. The week was high- lighted by a pumpkin carving contest and a dress- up day in which students could wear costumes to school. The Homecoming Queen, who was Virginia Garcia, was announced and crowned at the game. The King, Willie Gutierez, was crowned later at the dance. The turnout at the dance was extremely good at which many alumni showed up. Everyone enjoyed the dance as the band, RevoIution played. Each class worked hard to create a float that represented the Trick or Treat theme. They all came up with an exceptional float but the Freshmen won out. They received first place while the Seniors got second. The Sophomores took third place and the Juniors received fourth. Dress-up day was a big success. Many students took the chance to dress in costumes rather than normal school dress. They all had fun and enjoyed them- selves. 91? .fry- Above: Homecoming King and Queen Willie Gutierrez and Virginia Garcia. Over 200 people attended, decked in their semi-formal and formal outfits and allready to have a good time. They danced to the music of the Chican- os for the evening. Refreshments, such as punch and cookies along the corners for those dancers who danced their cares away, but also ended up with sore feet! ll The Spanish and GAA clubs did a great job of decor- ating, especially trimming a ten and a half foot tree which was set up in the middle of the gym. There was also a snow scene in the back corner to complete, at least in mind, a white Christmas in Arizona. Every- one seemed to enjoy themselves. Let's hope for an even bigger and better formal for next year, 74-75 Sweetheart and Bechelor: Joyce Mingus and Guy Jacobs Sweetheart Dance Goes Over Big The Sweetheart Dance turned out to be a big success. The Bachelor and Sweetheart were both crowned at the dance. The candidates were lL to Ri: Karen Esposito, Linda Holly, Joyce Mingus, Guy Jacobs, Jeff McKenzie, Tim Wacker, and Rod Forgia. On the day of the dance, which happened to be Valentine's Day, the Sweetheart candidates had to catch pigs while the Bachelor candidates had to fry some eggs. Coached by members of the football team, the girls practiced after school all week long in order to pre- pare for a long, hard fought game. The game re- mained scoreless for the first three quarters despite desperate tries by both sides. Then, in the fourth quar- ter, Melissa Ford intercepted a Junior pass and ran the ball for a Senior touchdown, The Seniors won with the final score 6-0. Many free hours are spent at home studying working, or just plain having fun. The local pizza parlor fthe VD turned out to be one of the favorite places to go after games. Many people came to talk, eat, or plan other activities. Among these activities is the sport of TPing. This turned into one of the favorite ways to show your friendship towards one another. Many people spent their free time riding horses or dirt bikes. Others would go ice skating or pursue a specific hobby they happen to like. Sometimes they even got together to play football at the college. The State Fair always presented fun along with movies, pro basket- ball or hockey, or just going to the tram ps. There was always someway a student could use his spare time and everybody found some way of enjoying it. - I Many important events have made 74-75 a very historic year. These happenings have effected us in all areas of our lifeg entertainment, politics, world events, and sports, IN PO LITICS: There were quite a few important events that took place on the political front. On August 9, 1974, Richard Nl, Nixon resigned from the office of the Presidency of the United States of Amer- ica. He ended his career as the 37th President after resigning due to great pressure put upon him by political opponents and Watergate. On the same day, at 12:03 p.m., Gerald Ford be- came the next President. He nominated Nelson Rockefeller as his Vice President and together, Ford and Rockefeller became the first Presiden- tial team not elected by the voters. Ford's first important decision as president was his decision to pardon Nixon from any involve- ment that Nixon might have had in Watergate. He then implemented his amnesty program on September 16. Draft evaders now could work for their pardon instead of facing a jail term or dis- honorable discharge. Congress, stimulated by the number of new mem- bers, started to question the seniority system. The Vietnam-Cambodia question also came up again in Congress. In February, President Ford said that Cambodia would fall unless given more aid. Congress then sent a committee to South Vietnam and Cambodia to investigate and report on what they found, The majority agreed that more aid was needed and that the present aid should be continued. The powerful head of the House Ways and Means Committee, Wilbur Nlills, lost his position due to his involvement with Fanny Fox, an exotic dancer. It was said that he was trying to promote her talents as an entertainer. o Supreme Court Justice Earl Warren died July 9, 1974, IN ECONOMICS: The economy was hit with the combination of a recession and inflation. The recession caused widespread unemployment which put over 87. of the work force out of work. It was predicted that unemployment could go as high as 10'Xs. Food prices rose drastically in the past year. This was mainly due to the high cost of animal feed and fertilizer, inflation, and shortages. Sugar prices skyrocketed in early 1975. This caused some people to start hoarding this com- modity, Energy was also a problem again this year. Al- though there were no gas lines, much emphasis was put on energy self-sufficiency. Ford came up with a plan that would raise the import tax on the oil coming into this country. In this way, he said, we would be forced to use less oil be- cause of its price, therefore becoming self-suf- ficient, Congress came back with its own plan. In order to find solutions to our economic woes, many plans were put into effect to help stimu- late the economy. A U.S. citizen was allowed t own gold for the first time in 40 years. This meant that the government would sell gold for the first time since the Great Depression, The Auto makers came up with their own idea about how to sell more cars. They offered re- bates of up to S500 on a new car. This worked well for the dealers but the sales still were not back to normal. A question aroused over Arab investments in U.S, firms. Some people said it would help the economy to allow the Arabs to invest their Oil billions in American stock. Others stated it O would only give the Arabs more control over U,S, foreign policies. IN THE NATION AND THE WORLD: Archbishop Makarious, President of Cyprus, was ousted by Greek Cypriots on July 17, 1974, Negotiations between Makarious and the Greek Cypriots were started immediatly after the coup but soon broke down. On July 20, Turkey invad- ed Cyprus to protect the Turkish minority. In February of '75, the Turkish sector declared it- self a free and independent state. Terrorism was still prevolent. The IRA was still active as was the PLO. The Weathermen of the '6O's also reappeared. Kidnappings, bombings, and murders were almost common happenings. The OPEC countries started a black list which had the names of companies that did business with Isreal. The idea was to stop giving oil to these firms until they stopped doing business with Isreal. A famine and food shortage hit both India and Africa. Millions died from starvation and thirst, On the national front, bussing in Boston was a big controversy. Race riots started in many schools, and some schools even had to be shut down. The conviction of Calley was overturned. Calley was the only person prosecuted and convicted for the My Lai incident of 1968. Traffic deaths dropped due to the new 55 m.p.h. speed limit. Mrs. Martin Luther King Sr. was shot and killed on June 30 while attending church services, Patty Hearst where are you? Evil Knevil failed to jump the Snake River Can- yon. His rocket-cycle couIdn't make it across the canyon. It crashed in the river but Knevil was not hurt. In Peoria, the high school bond issue failed again. Nextyear'sfreshmen are going to be on double sessions. IN ENTERTAINMENT AND SPORTS: The movie business made a come back in 74-75 Business boomed with the newest type of movie, the disaster movie. Earthquake, The Towering Inferno, The Poseidon Adventure, and Airport 75 were just a few of them. The Way We Were won the song of the year award. The Sting recieved the award for best picture. Many great entertainers passed away. The most famous was Jack Benny. Others included Walter Brenham, Mama Cass Elliot, Joe Flynn of McHale's Navy fame, Agnes Moorehead of Bewitched , Ed Sullivan the famous MC, and Frank Sutton, alias Sgt. Carter from the Gomer Pyle show. Jacqueline Susann the author of THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS and etiquette ex- pert Ami Vanderbilt also died. In sports, the NFL players went on strike, The strike ended when the regular football season started. The Steelers beat the Vikings in the Superbowl. The A's beat the Dodgers in the World Series, Famous baseball player and announcer Dizzy Dean died on July 17. Hank Aaron pulled off the impossible in baseball this year. He broke Babe Ruth's life-time home- run record. anno-11-sem. w - , um. 1: Y-nun-nu1nm. . X. 9504, Ju S ' 1. ' I Y I'-x ,. Despite all this, Peoria made a pretty impressive showing, ending the season with a 5 and 5 record. That is not bad for a first year triple A team. The St. Mary's game turned out to be a disappointing but ex- citing game. Peoria lost by only three points K8-113, the closest game St. Mary's had all season. Peoria was winning the game clear up until the fourth quarter. Golden, T. Paluszcyk, R. Harbin, D Pickering, J Barnhart, W Gutierrez The Sunnyslope game also proved to be a good close battle. Peoriawon the game with a 14 to 13 victory. The Apollo Hawks gave us a game to remember. Peoria won but that wasn't the interesting part of the night. A fight broke out during the fourth quarter which delayed play for about ten minutes. Every- thing turned out alright with no hard feelings towards each other. On the whole the season went well and Peoria fans enjoyed themselves. EZ' 'Y-.-if ff' Qi ., ss A ir y, i- 45? ':'aHAf 1' I YL-Q! JV Take First in Skyline J.V. had a great season taking first in the Skyline division of AAA. This was their first year of AAA competi- tion, and they couldn't have done better, winning eight and losing g only one. They beat the tough squads of Glendale, St. Mary's and Brophy. Before the season began, the team set two goals, one was to go un- defeated and the other was to take first place. Sunnyslope spoiled their first plans for a perfect season in a tough defensive battle. The season was highlighted by a nightime victory 28-22 over St. Mary's, one of the top ranking schools in the state. Coaches Gonzalo and DeSeelhorst did a great job in leading the team. Frosh Put up Fight 4 3 .. ll On the whole it was an unhappy season for the frosh gridmen. There were two teams, the A team was for frosh over 120 lbs. while the B team was for those under 120 lbs. The reason for two teams was that there were too many frosh turn outs to put succesfully on one team. The two teams were designed to give everyone a chance to play. , Although they put up a great effort 'it would seem they just could not ' get it together. The A's had a 3-4-1 season while the B's went 0-6. They tried hard and never lost spirit despite the disappointing losses. The season was highlighted when the cagers defeated the Tolleson team twice, and beat Cortez the second time around. They also defeated Aqua Fria in a very well played game. The opening Carl Hayden game also proved to be a good one, despite defeat. Q. ll AI I Publications Further Efforts to Improve The Publication Staffs consists of three different staffs, the Newspaper Staff, the Annual Staff, and the Photography Staff- The Newspaper Staff worked hard to bring to the students a much improved Panther Prowler. Many hours went into writing and editing the stories, all of which were informative, interesting, or funny. They sent two staffers to Publication's Workshop this past summer where they learned the how to 's about newspaper. Three Annual staffers went also. They spent ten days in Flagstaff learning everything they could about good yearbooking. The Annual Staff produced, what we consider, an up to date yearbook. They worked hard, spending many hours of their free time in order to make this yearbook the best. They stressed origi- nality and special effects in order to give the book more appeal. The Photography Staff did an equally important job. They supplied all the staffs with the pictures they needed. They, too, give up their spare time to take pictures at games and dances. They put a special effort into taking color pictures for the opening section of this book. All in all, the Publication staffs tried hard to improve all of Peoria High's publications. They end each year by running Field Day, These are just a few of the things Student Coun- cil does for you. They also help the community by giving Christmas boxes to the needy.
