All empty, gutted. Hardly even a memory to be stirred of the once fashionable coffee shop just off the lobby, the elaborate cages behind which clerks reminiscent of Franklin Pangborne summoned bell- hops and stamped receipts, or the panelled swinging doors that exited onto Liberty. People stood on street cor- ners and rooftops to watch her die, drawn by the specta- cle of castrophe without the danger. That's real steel they got in that building, one man said. And when it was over some of that real steel still held up the top floors of the annex. Another piece angled upwards from the wreckage of the hotel like some symbolic piece of sculpture, twisted and bent but indestructible. Workers in hard hats were removing protective plywood from buildings along Jefferson and Liberty. An end loader churned into the rubble. A young man passed carrying a souvenir brick. Liberty was still littered with scraps of broken glass and slats from Venetian blinds. From a window in one of the remaining top floors of the annex a piece of tattered curtain waved in the cold wind. As if in mockery. Not all of the old Jefferson Hotel died. Only a moment before the blast leveled the old Jefferson Hotel Sunday morning, November 19, 1978, a tat- tered scrap of curtain waved from a seventh floor window, as if in ghostly farewell. Then came the muted blasts and the hotel folded and collapsed like an empty gunny sack, leaving a huge cloud of dust billowing off to the southeast, like a thick fog. It took nearly 10 minutes for the dust to settle and for the eye to perceive the massive pile of rubble remaining, behind which the top floors of the annex still stood. Something prophetic and sad about this fall. Something awesome, too, in the kind of controlled demolition that seems to erase 65 years of history, almost a lifetime, in a matter of seconds. One moment a part of the city sky- line, one of those fixtures that seem immutably in place, and the next, nothing. Buildings of course hold people, events, things. Not memories, which exist only in the mind. And yet there are rich echoes here, memory- inspiring, not only of the great days of proms, wedding receptions and parties, but of the lesser ones, too, when old people sat in these quiet, darkened rooms and looked over the city, waiting, waiting. 13' ,KKK W is 1, EWKK V,,-V , 1 f,--f 17, 11111, 1 ,Y , 1. .rn ,, X ' H x 1 , '11 fav' ,---i 1511 1 if 1 1 f f 4: '11 , ff if I ,, if 55 1, Z1 1 ' 1 1 1 11 1 ,-,. ,. - H 11 1' ti if 1 1 1 5 H11 1 ' F 1 'i' 111 1 , I 1 1 11 I 11 :f r 7 5, 2 1- .t.,, W1 1, 4 Q tii. 2 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 ll 1 1 1 1 1 llll .1 1 Z!- if if ' W1 71, 1 -1 Y cttw, ,: - ?1 n.f..2'.'S.T- 15 1fglil,,1, ,silt gm , 5 H KJ K M Q ...,. , ,air 1,.
