ln Congress, July 4, 1776. The unanimous declaration of the thirteen United States of America. When in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for A one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and of T0 D nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of man- I kind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation . . . July 4, 1776. Two hundred long years have passed since that day on which our founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence. We've come a long way since the era of powdered wigs and ruffled shirts, and we still have a long way to go before reaching the end of the road. However, two hundred years is an age to be proud of and should be prop- erly appreciated. Our bicentennial celebration has given birth to a growing interest in the history that we, as a nation, have created. Historians, politicians, news reporters, and other interested citizens are all questioning iust exactly what we have learned from the past. Although occasional incidents sometimes give us reason for doubt, we have learned quite a bit from our heritage. A handy example is our own city, Peoria, Illinois. Earlier years have endowed Peoria with a somewhat tarnished reputation, but we have worked hard to improve ourselves. Not so long ago, in 1968, Peoria was named an All-American City. We have a beautiful art and history museum, several fine recreational areas, and some busy new shopping centers on the northwest side of town. ln addition, an all-new downtown is one the way, along with fresh school buildings and improvements to already accepted establishments. Sure, we have made some mistakes, but that is still the best way to learn. The 1976 CREST will attempt to answer the question: What is Peoria today?
