I i Karla Ingersoll reads her part in the production of The Minister's Black Veil. Literature Productions Iristili Dramatic Spirit A background in literature and grammar enabled students to read and write English correctly. Freshmen were taught the stan- dards of grammar that were to be used through high school. Creative writing gave a chance at self-expres- sion. Sophomores studied lulius Cae- sar and were introduced to memory Work. Iuniors Worked on vocabulary and grammar, and studied the his- tory of American literature and auth- ors. English authors, especially Shakespeare, Were the main project of the Seniors. Term papers and oral reports were required in some classes. Students also Worked on projects to provide illustrations of En- glish at Work. Iulius Caesar is attacked outside the Forum in Mrs. Scott's room.

Students Learn Customs 0 Foreign Lands Foreign language study taught students not only a proficiency in language, but a knowledge of cus- toms and traditions of a foreign land as Well. Peoria High offered courses in French, Spanish, German, and Latin. First and second year classes worked on conjugations, grammar, and vocabulary. Advanced classes used their language knowledge to read and perform works of foreign authors. Tape recordings and rec- ords were used to aid understand- ing of spoken languages. The various language clubs pro- moted interest in foreign languages with meetings, seasonal parties, and guest speakers. Dates are no problem if students can understand the German clock
