Pleclged to Progress. .All-American City it . io? ' , 'Aka as .. -2 Peoria . . . City of the Century . . . working for a better future for its in- habitants. One sunny day last spring, amid cheers cmd clapping, Mayor Lehnhausen proudly accept- ed the All-American City Award. Many factors had combined to make our city outstanding. Courthouse Square exemplified what citizens' committees had accomplished. When plans for our new courthouse first appeared, they included a large parking lot. Peorians felt, however, that this area should provide a mid- town center of beauty and caused the blueprints to be altered to in- clude landscaping. Business and in- dustry's movement to abandon the downtown area halted. Banks, mo- tels, and churches began rebuilding, and Caterpiller erected its world- wide headquarters here. Washing- ton Square rose on a previously run- down site, private citizens obtained money for a new animal shelter, and the Park Board moved to purchase land on which to build a waterfront park. Foresight, faith, and fifty mil- lion dollars combined the make a city of the future out of Peoria. Introductlon Page 3

L Peoria High met the challenge to change with the times. Switching to IBM scheduling, adding a fifth coun- selor, projects sponsored by the PE departments, and other curriculum modifications typified Central's pro- gressive spirit. The school tried a new setup first semester involving five lunch hours and a fourth hour homeroom but discarded the latter in Ianuary. Extra-curricular activities served to enrich the participants. Teachers and students also cooper- ated to maintain the traditions as- sociated with PHS through scholastic and athletic accomplishments.
