Principals As a youth Nlr. Hovey was a villager in Vermont. He must have been precocious or he would not have begun teaching at the age of fifteen. He was graduated from Dartmouth College in l852 and resumed teaching in New England. Then he heard and heeded a call to come to Peoria, Illinois, and take charge of a private school for boys. Wheii the first public high school was organized in l856 Mr. Hovey was asked to organize it and become its first principal. Mr. Hovey had a great interest in teacher training and became a leader in establishing a State Normal School. ln a Bill creating a State Normal School Board Mr. Hovey became a member. The Normal School began in 1857 and Mr. Hovey was made its first president. After four years of organization Mr. Hovey was called to the colors and became a Colonel in the Northern Army. He reached the rank of brigadier general. imfggbj a saggy X 6 - i Rfk . kxfjyjw. Rae il , Ai? xgixgkiiizjgk igflagiiy Kg! R iii? M . Edi:Q2.i-.fri 0 REM fi iii'f J Page 12

However, through some valu- able old photographs of a few of the outstanding teachers of our early years, we are immediately able to sense that quality of scholastic greatness that has marked our history.
