Howard A. Hunter, Principal F Swedell BessD Hale Greetings, Class of 1951: ln this farewell message, may l tell a story or two? Some years ago, an American tourist in England was admiring one of those fine old English lawns. He said to the gardener, This is the most beauti- ful lawn l have ever seen. l'd like to know how you do it. What is the secret? Well , said the gardener, it's not so difficult, sir. You iust seed it and fertilize it and trim it and roll it and you keep that up for about two hundred years and by and by you begin to have a really fine lawn, sir. My dear young friends, as you leave Peoria High School, it is the sincere hope, yes, the prayer, of your teachers that you will tind durable foundations upon which to build with your life, and so build that those who follow after you may carry on from where you leave oft. When God wants a mushroom, He grows it overnight. -' When He wants an oak tree, He takes a century or more to mature it. . XAnd be assured, Graduates, that in this great America there are k XY' durable foundations. When St. Paul's Cathedral was being built in London, its great architect, Sir Christopher Wren, unknown to the stone cutters, was walking through the church yard one day. He stopped to speak with some of the workmen. He asked the first one, What are you doing? X and received the reply, Cutting stone for eight pence a day. ' A second workman replied to the same question, Cutting this key- X N stone to fit in the arch of yonder window. A third stone cutter, when Xxx'asked the question, straightened up to his full height and replied, Xyvith a ring of pride in his voice, Helping Sir Christopher Wren build a cathedral, sir. Be builders of cathedrals, young people! Sincerely yours, BOARD OF EDUCATION Seated L-R: Mrs. Alice J. Young, Ass't. Sec., George Miles, Pres., Dr. Melvin G. Davis, Supt., Dr. John H. Harris, Ass't.
