Waving her talent-tipped wand over her skilled band of helpers she published the histories of the Centralites in perfection never before attained. Four times the guerdon of All-American was be- stowed upon the CREST due to the unceasing dili- gence, patience, and competence of this enchantress and her staffs. Wise and gracious, she imparts the secret of her lore to all who come to her for knowledge. The crystal ball of the past reflects the success of these magic folk in learn- ing well their lessons of sorcery and witchcraft, and mirrored in its shim- mering depths is their tale of bitter struggles, failures and triumphs. Our enchanted book of prophecy does not reveal the perils and pleasures await- ing them, lout during the four years within these sheltered boundaries, they have been skillfully guided by past masters in the art of Wizardry, and now stand, Well armed with knowledge, ready to combat the world. X wo REGENT PRINCE VIC With great resourcefulness and efficiency, Vic Prince has successfully ruled the fairyland of the Centralites during the past ye-ar. Forceful and capable, he directed the destinies of his people and did for them all that which lay Within his magic power. His was a dynamic personality, intense, energetic, and genial, compelling the good-will of all, and Winning for Central Castle many privileges and honors. Valiantly he combated all threatening evils and aided the powerful sorcerers of the realm in their battle against those mighty adversaries, ignorance and in- dolence. Striving for the best for his enchanted kingdom he did not spare himself in fullfilling his trust as reigning prince. So Well did he rule that the Centralites have prospered as never before and his reign Will go down in the annals of this land as one of the happiest and most successful of all time. Ninety-N ine In their own little castle these scribes and printers composed their scroll of the latest news every week, to distribute to the other tiny inhabitants of this Never never land . The work was divided into different departments opening various fields of interest to ambitious folk. Idle- ness was a thing unheard of in this bee- hive of activity . . . everyone doing his share of work. Editor-in-Chief, Ben Baer saw that everything rolled along smooth- ly, with Mr. Fowler supervising all. One Hundred Twenty-Two ll lE When the Tide rolled in on the land ot the Centralites it brought a mighty surge of literary giants: not of stature, but of mind. These mentally great aroused the enthusiasm of the native people with their compiled literature. Though they told their weekly news in the scroll called the Opinion and recorded their history in the CREST, the Centralites had never before had a journal of this kind. Mrs. Belsley, a great sorceress of the land, assisted Paul Herschel, editor and the other workers in arranging the ma- terial. Whether true or not that Nae man can teither time or tide , this Tide experienced no ebb. Having downed Streator, the Maroon Knights were overpowered by a strong Spring- field band of Warriors, and tied by the Chinks of Pekin. Invading foreign ter- ritory, the Central stalwarts defeated Ottowa 35 to 6, but tasted defeat in their next encounter with Lamphier of Springfield. Then, with clang of battle- axe and clash of brand, the bluff War- riors cornpletely routed an invading Bloomington squad, 26 to 0. ln the last game of the tournaments, the brave Knights used to their advantage, the skill gained during the season's play, and in the annual Turkey Day joust defeated their traditional rivals of Manual Castle, 26 to 6. The Maroon Knights of the Diamond started off with colors flying by con- quering Lowpoint 15 to 3. Bad luck was with the clouters in their next two en- counters, but a string of nine straight victories followed these two defeats. Such companies as East Peoria, Pekin, Spalding, and Manual tasted the bitter dregs of defeat in this consecutive win- ning streak of the Maroon batsmen. In their next eight encounters the Central Knights won five, defeating Streator in the second game of a double-header, after losing the first, and also vanquish- ing Woodruff, Spalding, Champaign and Pekin. In the District Meet, Central was awarded the first place trophy, and the next week in Champaign, at the State Meet, speedy Ioe Quedensley came in third in the quarter-mile race. Then, combating a strong Urbana aggrega- tion, the Maroon Knights received sec- ond honors in the Big 12 Tourney. Gar- nering more points than Woodruff and Manual combined, in the annual Great- er Peoria Meet, the Centralites not only won this classic for the twenty-seventh time, but also helped to establish three new records: B. I. Norton, victor in the pole-vault event for three successive years, broke the record formerly held by Bob Seisher, a Central alumnus: Clarence Tohn, athlete par excellence, shattered the former discus record, and also, with Carl Kent of Woodruff, broke the high jump record. Losing but two battles, and retiring from the field with honors once, during the year 1939 A. D., the Maroon Knights of the Links Won the acclaim of all. In their first encounter, the Central link- men completely conquered Spaulding, 12 to U, and did not suffer defeat until near their last tilt, When, in a three-Way meet with Danville and Urbana, they were vanquished by a strong Urbana band of Warriors. In the last dual affray, the Maroon golfers suffered their only intra-city defeat, at the hands of Wood- ruff, Whom they had subdued earlier in the season. In the District Tourna- ment, Central placed second as a team, and Bob Weise, a veteran of many battles, captured second place laurels in the individual scoring. In the Big 12 Meet, also, Central advanced to the second place position. In all but two oi their regular scheduled encounters, the bluffmen, under the guidance of their Coach, Sir Ioseph Meyers emerged with banners flying. In the remaining jousts, neither team could vanquish the other, hence the matches with Ioliet and Deca- tur both ended in a 3-3 tie. I-Ieroes of the tourneys were the mem- bers ot the two doubles teams, one com- posed of lack Clatielter and Bud Smed- many the other composed of Ed Lyon and Frank Barnett. These two combina- tions placed iirst and second, respec- tively, in the District Tournament, and the Clatfelter- Smedman duo reached the quarter-finals in the State Tourna- ment at Champaign. Both combinations advanced to the semi-finals in the dou- bles division of the Big I2 Tourney at Danville. 1. Wheelock, I.: Smedman, H., Barnett, F.: Lyon, E. Clatielter, I.: Malcolm, I-I. 2.
