H. S. Film Colony. You will see all the glamorous beauties, the handsome heroes, the clever comedians, the serious tragedians, the extras, the directors, the managers, the make-up experts, the costumers, the script-writers, and the cameramen. Every- one who had any part in making the super-productions undertaken on the P. H. S. Lot will meet you personally. Bon voyage! May your trip be joyful and your memories of it always pleasant! that the performers in the P. H. S. Film Corporation were kept in fit physical con- dition by a capable staffof trainers with Coach Salen l-lerke as chief director. Proper exercise and diet for healthful and happy living were faithfully prescribed by this group. Though its greatest re- sponsibility was training the stars who represented Peoria High School in compe- tition, it also willingly gave help to the most obscure extra on the Lot. As a small way of showing their appre- ciation, the scenaristsdedicate the 1938 CREST to the efficient staff of their ath- letic department. DOC HERKE ef ml? N 3 Y? Beginning the year's productions by a decisive victory over Woodruff, they continued their on. slaught winning the next six consecu- tive games. lt wasn't until the Herke coached boys visited Pekin that they tasted their only defeat. Determined to win the two remaining games, the Hunters annexed Lincoln with a 21-0 count. Playing the final game of the year at the dedication of the new Cen- tral Athletic Stadium, they turned in a brilliant performance by beating Manual in the Turkey day game-the final score being 19-0. FOOTBALL,w r Much credit must be given to the line, which so sturdily stood up under the opposition's bom- bardment, and, on offensive gave the necessary interference for many a long gain. The spectac- ular plays of the back field will also be remem- bered with thrilling gains, daring passes, line- plunges, and fied generalship. At the end of the season, Walt Spaninger and Earl 'Younglove were elected co-captains, the latter being selected on the All-State Football Team. Concluding a successful year, the squad put on the Football Follies, which was an immense hit with the student body. From part of the pro- ceeds they gave gifts of appreciation to Coach Herke, Coach Noppenberger, and Trainer Con- way for their sincere and untiring efforts. ' lst Row: Heinz, Johnson, Haehnel, Case, Spaninger, Younglove, Cox, Steidinger, Wasson, Manager Erlichman 2nd Row: Daglas, Duboff, Whiteside, Stavropoulos, Deuell, Kircher, Tucek, Morrison, Wunsch, Teick, Manager Livingston 3rd Row: Washington, Pugh, Patee, Ruhaak, Carver, Decker, Swords, Fruehauf, King, Gillette, Lyman, Coach Herke COACH NOPPENBERGER Winning the first five games, the '38 basket- BASKETBALL ball team looked as if it was going to continue the success that the Bluffmen enjoyed all fall. The next game they visited Pekin's Hardwoods and lost a hard fought game by a 2-point margin. The hot and cold team of the Hill- toppers again hit its stride by winning three more games and then lost another to the Streator quintet. They won the next four which included Manual, East Peoria, Spring- field, and Spalding. Canton their next foe, finally nosed them out 28-29 in an overtime. Woodruff was the Hunters' next victim, but, the next inter-city game with Manual ended in Central's defeat. Then came the chance for the Central quintet to even things up with Pekin, but it seemed that tate was against Peoria, for Pekin came from way behind to win a field goal. They ended their regular season in grand style by beating Springfield 46-39. They opened the Regional tournament by taking an easy win over Princeville and then annexed their second game with Woodruff. Coach Herke changed the line-up, putting Cox at Center and Williams at forward. This change proved very effective as they whipped Manual 36-28, thus earning a right to go to the District tournament at Pekin. This outstanding combination won their first two games, but in the finals, even though they played the best game of the season, the hard fighting Hunters lost to Pekin. During the season they won 19 out of 26 games, against some of the stiffest competition in the state, showing a successful season. M---.....,, f ,' 'Q' f my x l I' 2? N Q Midniie frolic LET,S PLAY SCREAMO ETHELBERT'S DILEMNA A beautiful 111, crisp 121 November night-Friday night and no date-Ethelbert sat dreamy 131 and pensive 141, watching the majestic 151 beauty 161 of gently-falling snow on the still 171, and tranquil 181 earth below. He decided on a peaceful 191, serene 1101, evening in his orderly 1111, ultra-modern 1121 room. Casting a proud 1131 glance around his magnificent 1141 room, his gaze alighted on his dazzling 1151 Fireman's badge and his colorful 1161 ole XYU banner. With an impulsive 1171 gesture, he threw a frivolous 1181 pillow up in the air, striking a lovely 1191, dainty 1201, vase and breaking it into tiny 1211 bits. He regretted this impetuous 1221, jubilant 1231 act and decided a serene 1241 evening at home was not for one so forceful 1251 and dynamic 1261 as he. Scanning the pages of his reliable 1271, valuable 1281, little 1291 book of numbers, he grabbed the trustworthy 1301 French telephone and dialed a number that was rated A No. 1 1311, superior 1321, excel- lent 1331, anticipating 1341 a sympathetic 1351, placid 1361 reply. Ah, who could be as charming 1371, vivacious 1381, whimsical 1391, sportive 1401 and attractive 1411 as she. But evidently, this popular 1421, good-natured 1431, miss was out for an interesting 1441 evening, so our affable 1451, energetic 1461 leading- man 1471 with a skillful 1481, dexterous 1491, hand, dialed another number. This time it was exuberant 1501 Conchita, piquant 1511, entertaining 1521, scintillating 1531, amusing 1541, whimsical 1551, altogether disanning 1561. This lively 1571 little number didn't live there any more. She had moved to distant 1581 shores, to glorious 1591 Hawaii. The cost of a long distance call over the bouyant 1601 waters, though it would be romantic 1611 and friendly 1621, was enough to apall our thrifty 1631, diligent 1641,. hero 1651. Though very generous 1661 and worthy 1671, Ethelbert kept an accurate 1681, direct 1691 record of all that he spent and he was honest 1701 and consistent 1711 enough to deny himself this delightful 1721 experience. Well, it looked like a tranquil 1731, cultured 1741, studious 1751 evening in his harmonious 1761, elegant 1771, room in spite of his manly 1781, amorous 1791 efforts to be sociable. Indeed, it seemed that our tall, dark and handsome 1801 hero was doomed. But, our suave 1811, congenial 1821, executive 1831 would not give up. A clever 1841 and definite 1851 thought hammered with insistent 1861 recurrence on his sensible 1871, progressive 1881 efficient 1891 mind. Very well, he would call jolly 1901 Bridget. She was fashionable 1911, amusing 1921, refreshing 1931, cheerful 1941, hearty 1951, unaffected 1961, also versa- tile 1971, and witty 1981. He would beseech her to be a good-egg 1991 and make the evening peppy 11001. She always was reasonable 11011 and hearty 11021. With neat 11031 precision 11041 he dialed this number. At the imperative 11051 call of the telephone bell, sprightly 11061 Bridget tripped gayly 11071 over her red-headed 11081 young brother who was preoccupied 11091 with his toy electric 11101 train. She continued her energetic 11111 way, however, to the telephone. With a wistful 11121 look in her heaven- ly 11131, lustrous 11141 eyes, she cooed in a throaty 11151, dramatic 11161 voice, Go ahead, it's your nickel. Our straightforward 11171 hero, in his bland 11181, dashing 11191, coquettish 11201 manner, said, Hia, Butch, this is Ethelbert. l'm in a jocular 11211, cheerful 11221 mood this evening and I'm wondering if you would go for a tasty, generous 11231 and delicious chocolate soda. We could throw in an invigor- ating 11241, refreshing 11251 and vital 11261 walk on the side, on the illustrious 11271 side at that. How's about being cheerful 11281 and sweet 11291, my little cup-cake? But to Ethelbert's chagrin, a definite 11301, decisive 11311, independent 11321 Nol came over the wire with a bang. He turned from the candid 11331 telephone determined to make an unforgettable 11351 evening of it, so, undaunted, our eager 11361 idol, in his thorough 11371 manner, traced his index finger down the magic 11381 numbers of his priceless book. Samathia Jones, a hot-trucker 11391 from Chinatown caught his hurried glance. Why this dash- ing 11401 number had all the attributes: She had style 11411, she was joyous 11421, affectionate 11431, humorous 11441, good-natured 11451, tantalizing 11461, brilliant 11471, exquisite 11481, worldly 11491, fiery 11501. A most unusual 11511, good sport 11521. She was decidedly sociable 11531, cordial 11541, entertainin- ing 11551, and cooperative 11561. Alas, in vain did Ethelbert, the debonair 11571, call her number. No answer. His exuberant 11581, spontaneous 11591, spirit 11601 somewhat dampened, he sat there trying to sur- mount this impenetrable 11611, solid 11621 wall. Did he hear feet-Steps-an imperative 11631, firm 11641 knock on his door? He dashed to the massive 11651 d001', eager f0I' S0me fine 11661 adventure. The natty 11671, important 11681 figure of the leader 11691 of his fraternity, looking impressive 11701 with an adorable 11711, vivacious 11721, darling 11731 maiden On each ITIBHIY erm- As everybody knows, two intoxicating 11741, sparkling 11751, Winsome 11761 femmes are too many for any man, no matter how courageous 11771 he is, therefore generous old Joe b1'0119hf Blfill 11731 WGIICIY end 080110 11791 Elissa, both in a radiant 11801 mood. Our sagacious 11811 Ethelbert excitedly hurried iI1i0 his all-enveloping raccoon coat,-just a good- natured 11821 bug-in-a-rug, that's all. Whoopeel A natural 118311-a real date at lastl On a well- known 11841, hay-ride I-Whoopee I I Out they ran, no time to be fastidious 11851 or dignified 118611 iubilant 11871 and intent 11881 on get- ting into that deep, sweet, hay. As our athletic 11891 valerous 11901 young man helped the nimble 11911, merry 11921 girls into the sturdy 11931 wagon, they heard the manly 11941 and maidenly 11951 voices, all laughing and talking at once. Now they were comfortably nestled in the sweet-smelling hay. Some- one was telling humorous 11961 anecdotes in a hearty 11971, deep voice. Last night I went to the Troc-the club of colorful 11981, dazzling 11991 maids and cultured 12001, smooth 12011 gentlemen in top-hats, white ties and tails. Everybody was dancing The Big Apple. A dance that is vivacious and original 120211 In fact, I go for it in a big way. My chic 12031 drag was a modern 12041 number, red-gold hair, talons and gown-yes, she was one swell 12051 little job. Listen- what was that our hero heard? The man who was so trim-looking 12061, telling this delightful 12071 story of the Lady in Red was Fred Astaire, the dexterous 12081, artistic 12091, creative 12101 dancer. Ethel- bert bestirred himself. wide-eyed he looked around and to his delight he beheld a galaxy of cele- brated 12111 famous 12121 stars, talented 12131 Nelson Eddy with our very supple 12141 Olive Oyl, gra- cious 12151 Greta Garbo with Charlie McCarthy, and yes,-it was good-looking 12161 Tyrone Power with 1Minnie Mouse snuggling cozily in the corner. Well, well, one never knows what ingenious 12171 surprise life may have in store for us sophisti- cated 12181 people, mused our hero, fancy that and dear me, Suzl He listened to Charley making love, Greta my darling 12201, my petite 12211, fragile 12221, deli- cate 12231 idol, be mine. I vant to be all alone, this mysterious 12241 lady answered in a husky 12251 voice. But why, my languid 12261 beauty? questioned our wooden friend. Because you are sitting on my most valuable 12271 foot. Ha, ha, one never knows whose foot one may sit on next, does one? At any rate, quoth Charlie, I want to tell you a dandy 12281 story about intriguing 12291 Delores, uh uh, what a dame l The festive 12301 floor show was on. From behind the protective 12311 wings swept a Mexican glam- our-gal 12321. Her flaming ruffled, skirt swayed with the rythmic 12331, movements of her body to the Mexican rattle-beat-- At that moment there was an amazing 12341 screech from the corner of the wagon. Help, Popeye-hel-upl Nelson Eddy was strangling the ethereal 12351 Olive Oyl. In the midst of all this excitement, Ethelbert heard thundering hooves behind him-the XYU Fire Wagon. Hey chief, yodeled our hero, in a fearless 12361 voice, What's up? Mah boy, there's a wild 12371 blaze at the girls'dormitory of XYU. When we heard the piercing gong of the fire-bell we donned our vivid 12381 fire-men's helmets in a spontaneous 12391 rush to the strong 12401 fire-wagon we rushed out with such impetuous 12411 speed 12421 that we forgot our trusty 12431 fire-hose. Junior is bringing it on his purple Rolls Wreck. The wagon is alive 12441 with volun- teer fire-men. , Eureka, we are here, yelled our brave 12451 hero, above the wagon's melodious 12461 creakmg. Through the impenetrable 12471 flames he saw the silhouette of a kindly 12481 Frosh. Helpful, skillful Ethelbert raced up the straightladder to the sixth floor. When this valorous youth reached the interior of the flaming room, he found, much to his surprise and disgust, that the maiden in distress was not a maiden at all, but a stately 12491 statue. As our hero was about to leave the room he heard a feeble yip. Whipping 81901111 he 05119111 UP a composed 12501 little poodle with a quick 12511, tender 12521, motion. Our SYNPBHWHC 12531 YOURS athlete 12541 began to descend the ladder to the reassuring earth below-when he dropped the poor little pooch, but retrieved him by the ears. Now the poodle definitely did not like this treatment, so he bit Ethelbert, in fact, he bit him right in half. And that was the end of Ethelbert, also his dilemna.
