Their purpose is not to bracket thought. They are simply pictures, neither paral- lel to the copy, nor meaningful out of context. They are typical of man—to whom hollow meanings have become the securities of life. 2 3 Good fences make good neighbors ........... Gateless, political chainlink, religious, social, dog- matic barbed wire fences. Fences, however, serve a double purpose. Not only do they keep others out, they also lock them in. Stifling strong barriers pay- ing tribute to advancing human- ity. If it weren't for people there would be no fences. Times were happier then. I remember when I was a kid. . . Fer- tile minds steeped in memories. Too much sugar kills the taste. Perhaps it's easier to look back for happiness already found than to labor in search for it again. There’s a certain inevitability in death and old photographs. 7 This page is dedicated to living. The 20th century is an age in which Norman Vin- cent Peale is alluded to as frequently as the Fates. Life is made and now directed. Characterized by people finding in others what should be found in themselves, it is our age, filled with ideals championed to their limits and forgotten, ideas devel- oping, and idols continually changing. Constancy, however, is not the only road to deliverance. There is life in every one of us peering from behindcustom’s dark- ened bars waiting to escape and roam. Some are living, others just live ... a shallow victory indeed. 11 12 Tractor Irate parents I. But there's wonder in a blade of grass . . . backyard sur- realism at its peak. Look a little closer. Step to the other side of the street. It’s different only if you try. Look until you see it 17 Administrators faced social unrest 20 The assistant principals have done a fine job assisting Mr. Mabry. One man cannot run an entire school and Mr. Oelerich and Mr. Cone have helped make sure that Mr. Marby re- ceives enough assistance. They prepare budgets and curriculum. I Mr Mabry constantly has the very best in- terest of all PUS students on his mind! 2 Principal Mr. Mabry wonders about the how’s and why’s of high school problems. Marian 22 Secretaries help PHS run smoothly The job of the secretaries and aids is to help keep Pensacola High running smoothly. In the main office transcripts are sent to colleges so that former stu- dents might be able to further their education. All types of forms have to be kept each day, and remain on file for further reference. Many telephone calls are answered and their messages relayed to the designated party. Phone traffic is sometimes quite heavy and messages quite often pile up. In all office matters the staff at PHS is totally competent and are always alert. I Mrs. Barbara Blakely answers the phone and relays the message to the right party. 2 Mrs. Peak helps check figures each day to make sure in each report 2 + 2 equals 4 3 Mrs. VanEtten strived diligently to keep Mr. Mabry’s tiring day running smoothly. 4 Lihrarv assistants and teachers aids enjoy discussing the day's high and low spots. 23 Guidance offers seniors college info This year again under the able guidance of Mrs. Mirian Staley the counselors help many stu- dents to shape their varied fu- tures. Course planning, prepara- tory tests, vocational tests and college entrance tests are all services provided by the Guid- ance Department. This year a new counselor was added to the old staff. Miss Leah Ann Jack- son was chosen to replace Miss Anne McDonald. 24 Library definite and needed study aid This year the PHS library meets many of the educational needs of each PHS student by supplying his teacher films, film- strips, books and numerous peri- odicals. The library, along with the capable staff members, is able to help further the educa- tional of all the PHS students, with the aid of the experienced Mrs. Bowles. l Mr. Brady sits and silently wonders about the ups and downs of juniors pains. 2 Mrs. Mirian Staley is often found with her hand on a phone and fier mind at work. 3 Mrs. rate on one of the many problems they face. 4 Students actually use their library prive- leges even though difficult to get. 5 Mrs. Simmons gives an unknown student directions on the location of books. 6 Mrs. Bowles strives diligently to keep the magazines and files in the correct order. 25 Long lines often await the hungry The lunchroom at Pensacola High was more often than not seriously overcrowded. Lines of- ten reached to the back of the cafeteria. To get a lunch it was not unusual to have to stand in line for almot half the allotted lunch hour. The food was more often than not well worth the wait. It was also nourishing and tasty. 24 Custodial staff helps clean-up PHS The custodial staff of PHS consists of both male and fe- male. They spent endless hours striving to keep the cluttered halls in a recognizable state of cleanliness. They picked up, swept, and mopped hall floors everyday. Endless efforts were put forth to keep PHS’s halls shining. ■? - -- 1 Lunchrooms arc always crowded as students strive to satisfy their hunger. 2 Studcnts usually have gobs of fun during lunch communicating with one another. 3 Students are anxious to get back to class af- ter a 30-minutc lunch break. 4 Mr. Seibert, one of the custodians at PHS. finds his work time consuming and tiring. Ella Williams. Lois 35 English offers more than grammar The English department has continued to try to make learn- ing English a worthwhile ex- perience for all the diversified students of PHS. Many of the general English courses have changed into specific one semes- ter courses, such as, British Lit. And Minority Lit. This break- down of courses into special areas of English and Literature Erovides for a wider range of se- ctions and enables students to take more courses of their liking. This year again. Miss Partridge headed the department. I Miss Willis, a new addition to the PHS staff diligently teaches her English class. 2 Students in Miss Partridge’s Grammar and Usage class reconstructed the Globe Theater. 3 Studcnts in Miss Thomas’ first period Eng- lish class are surprisingly alert. 4 A modern day Globe Theater reconstruc- tion shows much imagination and initiative. S Studcnts in Mrs. Spearmen’s advanced freshman class take a minute to socialize. 36 37 Social Studies gives glimpses of past The curriculum in the Social Studies department offers stu- dents a wide survey of knowl- edge and events. The inquiry approach used this year helps students to express opinions freely. Students enjoy tne free exchange of opinions on past events and the comparisons be- tween these and those of the present. Students in advanced American History instead of taking ordinary tests apply themselves to essay and position papers and are led by a new de- partment head, Mrs. Owens. I The busy hands of this Junior display the dexterity ncetfcd for the game of Panic. 2 Traccy Adams sits in American History and daydreams of days in the long ago past. 3 Mr. Lett. Putting aside his French teaching duties deftly guides a World History class. 4 Mrs. Owens gives a long lecture on the ups and downs of the 1920 stock market. 5 Mary Fuller and Burnadette Hunter paint an evironmental sign for their PAD class. 6 Mr. Wilson and Carol Elison discuss the past activities of old communistic friends. 39 Dissection adds interest to physiology Students work hard to acquire knowledge of science. Beginning with earth science, they work themselves on to higher levels of achievement. Through chem- istry and physics students learn about the laws of nature. Through physiology and biol- ogy, they become acquainted with earthly organisms. 40 I Sandy Partridge. Glen Morris. Larry Kim- bro work hard in cnemistry. 2 Mr. Lawson practices an informal way of teaching with his biology classes. 3 Bi)l Mcngcs and Scott Rector find time for talk dunng their chemistry class 4 Caught with a wary eye is Mr. Lawson, one of PHS’s new science tcacncrs. 5 Stephcn Johnson and Elaine Wilson find work with a Bunson Burner a heated event. 6 Physical Science offers many different and even exciting experiences. 7 Mr McArtnur usually bases h� s lectures on actual class demonstrations. 41 42 Computers bring new interest to math Students at PHS are able to choose from a wide variety of math courses, ranging from gen- eral math to advance courses in Algebra I and II, Geometry and Math Analysis. Mrs. Smith’s Al- gebra II students were taught the Basic Computer Program and made up programs praying that they would work. New cal- culators were loaned to the school and helped to create new interest in Math. 1 Sophomores Pam Bryant and Jerry Roy ex- change ribbons and talk in geometry. 2 Paula Bennet and Jan Melton attempt to plot out their programs with some help. 3 Steve Hamilton and Ronnie Murphy hcln solve an Algebra problem to Mr. Ward s amusement. 4 The computer keyboard seems to confuse sophomore Richard Su'tterficld. 5 A math student helps out in the classroom by grading papers after a hard test. 43 Foreign languages are all interesting When one sets out to learn a foreign language at PHS he has a wide variety from which to choose. Latin, French, German, and the all-time standard Span- ish. No matter what the choice, each language is interesting and also very challenging. Taking a foreign language gives one a broadened outlook and new ap- preciation of other cultures. Some languages are hard, others aren’t, But all are fascinating. I Mark Blaikie and Karen Gilmore hold a piftata as Karen Mayo attempts to break it. 2 Mrs. Lassiter's Latin class visits the library to learn more about the language. 3 Thcsc students try to learn all they can about the customs and ways of Germany. 4 Mrs Betty Kempson. Spanish teacher at PHS. gamely tries to get her students to learn 5 Mr. Lett and Terry Gin-Kel carry on inter- esting French conversations. 44 PE helps to build growing muscles 46 Striving until they reach the point of physical fitness is just one of the many aims of P.E. students. This includes not only participation in activities such as soccer, basketball, football, vol- leyball, gymnastics, and tennis but also courses given by the county that are health oriented, the competiton gives students a feeling of the thrill of sports. 1 Three unidentified PE students stop a min- ute from their daily activities to rest. 2 A vigorous game of football helps to de- velop a person’s mind as well as his body. 3 Pam Dueger trys out her skill of balance on the beam while her spotters look on. 4 Joyce Chestnutt and Norma King try out a new stunt on the tramp as classmates watch. 47 48 Home Ec. helps develop home ideas Home Economics helps in very many ways to develop a young woman’s talents to the fullest extent. She learns to cook basic money and time saving meals for low economy families. She learns all about the nutri- tional value of meats, fruits, and vegetables. All freshmen are also taught the fundamentals of sewing and how to cut out a pat- tern and sew it into a pleasing object. I Advanced sewing student learn to sew very complicated beautiful clothing. 2 This student washes the department’s dish- towel for the next period class’s use. 3 Mrs. Sheplcr answers this freshman’s ques- tion about how to sew on a neck facing. 4 Advanced sewing teacher Mrs. Williams demonstrates how to put in a sleeve. 5 Frcshmcn Home Ec. students learn the ba- sic skills pertaining to cooking meals. 49 Tigers type out tip-top Tiger tunes As in any other year. Business Education has had a full load of students, and for a good reason. Business Education teaches the needed knowledge for a girl looking forward to a secretarial or clerical future. It teaches typ- ing, shorthand, bookkeeping and a VOE course for advanced Business Education students. Ml 1 Senior Glenda Crawford finds being an of- fice assistant helpful and interesting. 2 Seeing hands busily typing is a common occurance in business education. 3 Juniors Susan Manard. Shervl Wilson, and Debbie Lowe work hard in bookkeeping. 4 Faye Hall and Debbie Clakely discuss the difficulty of a certain clerical problem. 5 Junior Vicki Nall has asked for some as- sistance from Mrs. Neimeyer in typing. 6 Concentration is needed when typing, learns junior Donna Andrews. 51 Industrial Arts fulfill young dreams Students entering the Indus- trial Arts field find many varied subjects. Electronics, wood shop and drafting help develop the exactness and dexterity of each student along with testing his mind. Students are rewarded af- ter a hard year’s work when their architectural design and shop projects win teacher’s approval. 52 Art turns out many promising talents Studying the basic elements of line, texture, form, color, shape and size helps give students a broadened outlook and appre- ciation for the art forms of todav. Varying materials such as chalk, clay, pencil, and paint show the student what can be done in different phases of the art field. Mr. Mason and Miss Brown offer expert help to any art student ana are capable in any field. I Michael Flemmings works hard at his saw taking out most of the flaws in this door. 2 Sheryl Weaver, here at the jigsaw, is work- ing diligently with some precision cutting. 3 Sammie Longmire concentrates on his work in the industrious course offered by shop 4 Paula Stewart's attention is drawn away from some work in the art room. 5 Sometimes. complete concentration is one of those things one just can’t do. Chorus allows many vocal freedoms Chorus at Pensacola High al- lows those who are vocally in- clined to develop their personal talents in the field of music. Chorus students learned to read a few notes of music and to carry a popular tune without the aid of a bucket and to have fun in the process. 54 Band students play their hearts out Band, at PHS provides an outlet for all those musically in- clined to expressed their talents. Beginning with the basic classes they were taught to read music and make noises somewhat pleasing to the ear. In the more advanced classes the sounds be- come more pleasing and the stu- dents work at it even harder. I Vincent Moore ponders over the trying musical piece given to him by Mr. Terry. 2 Chorus director Mr. Ike Terry leads the combined chorus in a rousing melody. 3 Alfred Padgett and Robert Crenshaw take time out to read the funnies. 4 Eugene Andrews practiced hard for the in- dividual contest for District One. 5 The percussion section of the Tiger band concentrates on its marching routine 6 Mr. David Van Sickle leads the B band hoping they’ll become concert band members. 55 Novice drivers taught driving skills Driver’s Education once again taught the student the necessary skills for obtaining the reachable goal of a driver’s license. Coaches Slusser and Green and Hollinsworth, aided by the building of an all-new exclusive driver’s education classroom, are again developing well-equipped drivers out of one-time novices. 56 ROTC gives basic military education Leadership—self-reliance- personal honor—all of these and more are the objectives of the Air Force Junior ROTC at PHS. Headed by Colonel Manion, the program is run efficiently. Its ac- tivities help promote patriotism and respect for authority. l The figure eight is one of the more difficult obstacles on the range. 2 Skill and alertness arc needed to complete the Drivers Ed Course. 3 Mr. Hollinsworth has settled quietly into the new Driver’s Ed. class. 4 PHS’s ROTC advisors are Sergeant Saxon. Colonel Manion and Colonel Howard. 5 Drill practice is a daily routine for ROTC students. 6 The boys in ROTC arc taught aeronautics and a basic study of melcorolgy. 57 Honor Society gave Christmas party The honor society started their year by inducting sev- enteen new members. With the drama club, they gave a play and Christmas party for the day care center. They sold tons of doughnuts to raise money for the fifty-dollar pledge to the Charity Drive. If gV-� 60 Spanish Honor Society sold pinata I Officers-Kathv (megs. Ramona Hicks. Sandy Patridge. and Beth Bradford. 2 Glenn Morris. Carla Livcsay. and Chris Golightly took care of the bulletin board. 3 Dee Lloyd and Myra Harris discuss pos- sible scholarships open to honor students. 4 Mark Blakie. Sharon Wilson, and Beth Bradford discuss a fanciful trip to Spain. 5 Charlotte Ledkins. Mark Browning, and Cheryl Handrop look at the map of Mexico. 6 Loretta (arrancejie and Karen Gilmore point out some of the sights of Spain. This year was spent by the Spanish Honor Society members in locating the Spanish speaking Sle in Pensacola in order to j the language first hand, the club sponsored a booth at the Charity Drive at which they sold chances for a pinata. 61 Annona Staff prepares Volume 72 Working on the Annona meant months of hard work. Staff members tried frantically to learn to draw layouts, crop pictures, and write and count copy. Weekends, holidays, and time after school were spent trying desperately to meet the deadlines. Sighs of relief were heard as the last pages were shipped off to the printers. All the staff members had a feeling of accomplishment when they viewed the final product. 62 1 Clevctte Malden and Iris Manuel find cropping pictures tiring and challenging. ■2 Cinay Gordon counts copy as much as 5 times in order to make it fit the layout. 3 Annona staff members exhibited spirit by decorating a car for homecoming. 4 Bonnie Geist finds that there is time for laughter in spite of all the work. 3 The staff held a yearbook assembly in or- der to promote a large Annona sale. 63 Tiger’s Tale kept PHS informed The Tiger’s Tale, the monthly newspaper, helped us to see each other's views and opinions by means of features, articles, and editorials. During sixth pe- riod all the staff combined their efforts and talents to produce the paper which helped make the school what it was. Without the Tiger’s Tale we would not have understood each other as well as we did. Scribblers developed poetical minds Scribblers was a club that dealt with the poetical aspects of its members’ minds. At each meeting they wrote poems and read them aloud to each other for a mass critical evaluation. Sometimes members tried their hands at limericks along with contemporary poems. I Tiger's Tale staff put a lot of time and hard work into every publication. 2 Miss Larcau explains some of the finer points of w riting to Elizabeth Simpson 3 Ray Kessler snapped a beautiful picture of Dr. Rob Palmer for a Tiger’s Tale. 4 Shcrry Weaver submitted many of her po- etry works for the group evaluate 5 A group of young poets listen attentively as one member reads his poetry. 6 Bonnie Geist racked her brain to find words to tell of her feelings about life. 65 Mu Alpha Theta studied computers The object of Mu Alpha Theta was to promote a lasting interest in higher mathematics. The students sold doughnuts to raise money for their induction banquets. Some of the members paid an interesting visit to the computers at the city hall. I Bctty Hackett and Wanda Hendricks dem- onstrated the abilities of the members. 2 Dee Lloyd. Mu Alpha Theta president, found it difficult to cope sometimes 3 Mr. Gwin Harris expanded his own math interests by sponsoring Mu Alpha Theta. 4 Terry Grinkel and Arne Grimes spent their free time discussing the Bible. 5 Susan Henderson look much pleasure in being the president of Christian Youth 6 The members of Christian Youth had the great fortune to have many guest speakers. 66 Christian Youth held prayer meetings The activities of Christian Youth showed their devotion to Christ. They held prayer meet- ings on Fridays and participated in a city youth rally. Their love extended to the Navajo Indians, to whom they sent clothes. 67 Student Council headed Charity Drive The student council was an organization that was designed to further the relationship be- tween the administration and the student body. They accom- plished this by keeping the stu- dents informed of all the hap- penings and activities. By sponsoring fund raising activ- ities like the Charity Drive, and activities like the Junior-Senior Prom, Homecoming week pro- jects, and Homecoming dance, they promoted feeling of unity and helped raise spirit through- out the entire school. The stu- dent council mediated when trouble arose between the fac- ulty and the students. 68 French club sold bread and played Petang The object of the French club was to give students a lasting love of the French language. The students sold French bread. They enjoyed challenging the French clubs of some other high schools to many exciting games of Petang. The club members really appreciated the fine guest speakers they had. 1 Joetta McKain and Valeric Hammond cared for the student information center. 2 Scotty Sanderson. Sharon Wilson. Sharon Biggs, and Renee Corley show communication. j Mrs. Armstrong and some council mem- bers discuss the Charity Drive plans. 4 These two Frencn club members find that a diagram helps in Petang strategy. 5 Joycc Singleton and Tommy Long care- fully plan the sale of French bread. 6 Doue Wamble tries desperately to back out of selling French bread on Saturday. 69 Drama-Debate appreciation of Drama-Debate sold dough- nuts and candles and held car washes to finance their adven- tures. The debate team went to many tournaments. Clevette Malaen gave an interpretation builds forensics at the state tournament in Tampa. Two plays were per- formed—“The Bad Children,” a reverse of “Hansel and Gretel,” and “Room 222,” a take-off on the T.V. show. I Clara Hooks and Robert Atkins act out their parts in a short play by the drama club. 2 Thc Drama club acts out a short skit for PHS at one of the successful talent shows. 3 Studenls in the Drama club await the min- ute they appear on stage for the Annona. 4 Tne officers of Brothers and Sisters United exhibit great pride in their club. 5 Mr. Wilson and Mr McArthur Sponser a unique club. Brothers and Sisters United. 70 Bros. Sis. United helped strive The purpose of Brothers and Sisters United was to form a bridge between the black and white students. They tried to cultivate a unity through under- standing of different back- grounds and cultures. 71 Key club showed school pride in their activities Key club, the junior function of the Kiwanis’, set “The En- richment of Man’s Environ- ment” as their theme for this year. One of their main objec- tives was to develop Initiative and leadership. A few of their many activities were a Christ- mas party for the crippled chil- dren, Student-Faculty basket- ball game, an end of the year party honoring the seniors, and the State convention in Miami. The French word Entente means un- derstanding. These juniors and mostly senior girls have tried to understand and to participate in those activities that will bring about a better PHS. Entente sponsored a Kick-Off dance for football season, won two awards for working with Cystic Fibrosis Drive, painted the football lock- ers and did other deeds of service. 73 Y-Teens goal was creating harmony Y-TEENS-(l) Taleta Matthews. Diversified Cooperative Tra- ining was a class and a club rolled into one. The members had doughnut sales, stationery and note sales, pillow sales, and car washes to raise money. Alto- gether they raised over one thousand dollars. Four students were chosen to represent PHS's DCT at the state convention in Miami. The whole club took an educational trip to Disney World. 84 D.E. used the calculating machines Distributive Education, under the leadership of Mr. Burry Johnson, trained students to cope with a world of buying and selling. The students were put to work in sales positions. In the classroom they were taught to use calculating machines, such as the adding machine. 86 Chorus helped students improve Chorus gave a student the op- portunity to display his talent, no matter how small it was. The students learned to read music and to sing a variety of songs, from old to modern. They im- proved their own talent through practice. Underclassmen chorus members prepared to join either the Voices or Opus. I Mr. Burry Johnson. Under the direction of Mr. Ike Terry the group sang at many varied civic, social, and school functions, including the Pensa- cola Interstate Fair, the PHS Open House and the Cancerama on WEAR television. They also performed at other schools around the city including the Academy, Liberal Arts, and Beggs. I “Joy To The World” was the message of the Voices to the students at a pep rally. 2 Before a performance, the Voiccs'and Mr. Terry out in long hours of practice. 3 Somc girls from Opus took out from sing- ing to pose for the camera. 4 Patty Tisdale. Zela Damiels. and Faye Hall listened carefully to Miss Lareau. Opus made music fun Opus was an excellent op- portunity for many girls to use their singing ability. While not only improving their talent, these girls added to the enjoy- ment of all other students. Many types of songs were performed by Opus for a wide range of au- diences. Under the leadership of Miss Alice Lareau, Opus be- came a fine group. 89 I The PHS marching band was a welcome diversion from the football game. 2 In order to put on fantastic programs, the band practiced throughout the day. 3 After school practice was one of the rea- sons the color guard performed so well. 4 The banner carriers practiced their routines mainly during sixth period band. The Tigers opened the season with a convincing victory over Catholic. Then against Woodham the Tigers again found the key after their six losses and powered the Titans for a 16-7 win. After giving Tate an early safety, PHS came back for a 6-2 victory. Led by seniors Leonard andolph, Fred Dixon, and Tommy Long and Juniors Alex Bell, Don Golay, and Boe Stallworth, The Tigers compiled a 20-4 record and a chance to represent Region One at the State Tournament in Jackson- ville. Enroute the Tigers’ only season defeats came at the hands of Pensacola Washington and Panama City Bay. Consistent showings by the relay teams and distance runners helped to make the Ti- ger Tracksters one of the most well rounded squads in this sec- tion of Northwest Florida.
