We hope to show in this. the 1951 Pennsman, with the building of the new Pennsbury High School as the theme, the way by which we, the students, have been developed, both in minds and bodies, into fine structures that will be lasting through many years of calm and storm. Therefore, we would like to dedicate this builders' log to our entire Pennsbury school system. We have tried through our write-ups, photography, and art work to carry through our theme showing the part that a school plays in the building of a nation. and world, strong in the ideals for which we stand. lust as the architects laid the foundation for the edifice which is to be our new school, our School Board has laid the foundation for the development of the material from within. Likewise the faculty, our foremen, have guided and directed our work in a' manner which they think will bring forth the best results. ' As the main workers, our seniors have emerged from the system well prepared to enter a world that is ever evolving and growing with new ideas and. problems. Behind them they have left the journeymen and apprentices who will grow and age along with the- new schooll We wish to thank the architects, foremen, and. workers who are building the new Pennsbury High School as well as the architects and foremen who- planned and directed tne learning within the old Pennsbury High School. All of you have had a part in. making us the builders of tomorrow. S C H 0 ol. Fnllslngton, Pennsylvania H, , Y FOREMEN We students seldom realize that our education is the result of the service and supervision of three groups of civic-minded persons composed of the administration. Parent-Teachers' Association, and School Board. These people, genuinely interested in youth and its welfare, have taken our problems as their challenge and duty with unusual foresight. All successful, lasting buildings must have well organized plans. As the architects oi this project, our Administration, P.T.A., and School Board, have tried to design and organize a system through which the workers may succeed in becoming well- rounded citizens oi a universe desperately demanding men and women prepared in attacking the challenges which face them day by day. As their share in developing these plans, the Administration-consisting of Mr. Medill Bair, Regional Superintendent: Mr. William Ingraham, Assistant Regional Superintendent: and Mr. R. Currier, Prin- cipal, who has just recently become a mem- ber of Pennsbury's System-has established a work-shop in which is organized the de- sired program for the student body. Also MR. RICHARD L. CURRIER Principal they have set up new courses and taken on new faculty members to allow the students to have the advantages constituted by these additional classes, namely, Advanced Biol- ogy, Business Law, Creative Writing, Dra- matics, and Public Speaking. Our P.T.A., of which Mr. Drake is presi- dent, consists of the parents of the students and the teachers of Pennsbury. This year they have, as in previous years, provided two scholarships to enable two students to .attend schools of further education. Also they have given a banquet for outstanding workers of the High 'School at which time they awarded medals ot merit to the most deserving. To establish smoother ties be- tween teachers and parents, the P.T.A. has organized adult study groups. Last and most important, the School Board, again presided over by Mrl Forrest lobes, has done an excellent job ot com- municating with Harrisburg to enable tur- ther development in the plans of a badly needed new High School. r As Longfellow once said, All are archi- tects of tate working in these walls ot time. MR. WILLIAM INGRAHAM MR. MEDILL BAIR Regional Superintendent Assistant Regional Superintendent ' ,hmmm Y' .9 -- X-we .M-ii,,,.,s. -Vs., N UNDERSTANDING faculty makes for a good future. If this statement is true. Pennsbury High School is on the road to being one of the best schools in this vicinity. As our forernen. the faculty have tried to understand our problems and advise us. lust as in building. the foremen advise the workers in order to help them become better builders, so have our foremen tried to advise us in order to make us better builders of the future. A new system used this year, in the hope that it would help the students, is the division of grades into three sections. Mrs. E. Carfagno is head advisor of the eleventh and twelfth grades: Miss I. Creagmile, head advisor of the ninth and tenth grades: and Miss M. Kelly, head advisor of the seventh and eighth grades. Each head advisor confers at least twice a week with the teachers of each class to discuss any problems which might arise and to study needs of pupils. Each foreman is well trained, already hold- ing master's degrees and in the process of taking graduate work towards higher degrees. Each foreman, alsojbelieves in a philosophy upholding' the view that a child's rnind and character are all important, the optimum development of which must be constantly striven for. . To develop the physical phase, activities such as basketball, boys' athletic clubs, baseball, girls' athletic clubs, hockey, foot- ball, and softball are offered. To develop the social graces, dancing clubs, the Iunior Prom, the Senior Ball, informal sports dances, and canteen are scheduled. To develop leadership and self- governing ability, Honor Society, Student Council, and Student Court have been established. To offer opportunities to develop hidden talents, the Color Guard, the Majorettes, the Band, the chorus groups, the junior and senior plays and numerous clubs have been programmed into the curriculum. As we look back over the two full years of Pennsbury's existence, we can see a definite growth and improvement in the musical activi- ties. ln 1948-49 music in our school was insig- nificant compared to its status today. A 25-piece marching and concert band, a girls' chorus, together with individual instru- mental lessons, made up the musical activities ot '48. This year, We have a 40-piece band, a 30-piece orchestra and a 7-piece dance band. In addition, we have a well-trained girls' our vocal department. From these various vocal groups can be selected practically any combination to suit any occasion. The princi- pal activity of these vocal groups is to present to the rest ot the school an operetta each year. They not only beat Neshaminy, but they swept on to conquer the ever-dangerous Bristol High. Because of over-confidence, however. they had to be satisfied with a tie with Southampton and a loss to Pemberton in a tough game. In view of injuries to the team, the next three games were unfortunately dropped to Bensalem, Mor- risville, and Council Rock. The fighting spirit of this unlucky eleven, however, refused to re- main long hidden and they came back strong to win the two remaining games with Borden- town Manual and St. Francis. The Falcons played three night games this year: one with Neshaminy which constituted the opening game of the season followed up immediately by the Bristol sortee. The rivalry between Morrisville and P. H. S. flaired up again in our third duel under the lights. P. Loef and E. Miller demonstrate the shoulder block. This year, for the first time, an intra-mural sports program was in- troduced into the Iunior High 'School. Beginning in the fall, six football teams were organized, composed of two teams from each of the three eighth-grade home- rooms. Each team chose a name for itself: the Scarecrows, Eagles. Cubs, Rams, Ramblin' Wrecks, and. Redskins. Together they made up two major leagues: the American League and the National League. I-liter a full season of playing foot- ball, the National League came out victorious and the Ramblin' Wrecks emerged as the champion team. Why so glum? the score's 0-O! Yes. our cheerleaders, coached by Miss C. Vella and captained by L. iPee-Weel Argenti, yelled loudlyg the rooters were out there screaming, but Pennsbury's 1950 hockey team dropped from championship to tie for second place. Coached by Mrs. D. Tompkins lMiss Morris before her marriage in Decemberl and Miss B. A. Nielson, the varsity played hard and, losing only 4 games out of 9, had a fairly successful season. The captain was Barbara Green. CHAMPS OF 1950 The 1950 baseball campaign was a very successful one inasmuch as the team, under the brilliant coaching of Wilmer F. Bachman, won fifteen out of sixteen baseball games, and clinched the l95U Lower Bucks County baseball championship. The championship, however, was partially jeopardized when in a game with Mornsvxue a decision in the course of play was not in accordance with the rules of the game and therefore was protested. In the replay of the game, Pennsbury showed the spirit and will to win that undoubtedly inspired the champion- ship and brought home another Pennsbury victory and a league-clinching record. Batting marks among the regulars were: Perry, .3545 Paone, .3525 Hunter, .3495 Saunders, .3115 Hibbs, .2985 Sacks, .2925 R. Bray, .2835 and B. Bray, .275. Leader in runs batted in was Iohn Paone.
