In this book you will find what we hope to be faithful repre- sentations of such abstract art forms as sur- realism and cubism, We cannot easily tell you what each of these words means since they were probably names invented in some cheap cate in Paris over the second bottle of Tokay with an eye fixed on a not-too-receptive public. But we do know that the artists such as Dale and Bracque are mem- bers of that group which broke away from convention and expressed itself in a new way. These people achieved their new effects be- cause they were first-rate craftsmen and they had no further need for mere technique. They did not paint life as it was seen by others, but rather they painted as they interpreted it and felt it to be. Try to understand them, because they are revealing glimpses of the world you now are making. The graduating class of 1950 has been sub- jected to the mill. They have learned tech- niques and methods. They, too, shall become master craftsmen able to rise above the tech- nical details. In time, it is hoped, they will even rise far enough to build an atomic world which is safe for all society - a world complete and secure in its existence. VanWagenen Top: Mr. Forrest C. lobes, though very busy as a company executive, still finds time to serve as an able president ot the School Board. Middle: Mr. Medill- Bair attacks the job of regional superintendent with enthusiasm and industry. Below: Mr. VanWagenen, also an executive, untiringly acts as president ot the Parent-Teacher Association. HE THREE MEN pictured on this page represent the three groups involved in providing this area with a school system that is fast taking the lead in Bucks County. Chief of these groups is the School Board, the work of which this year has consisted principally in spending time, effort, and money trying to work through red tape connected with building a new school. Fortunately, the end seems in sight and Pennsbury can hope very shortly to occupy new quarters. Working just as hard is the school administrative body, charged with the bettering of instruction as well as the smooth, eiticient running of the school. This year in-service training under Dr. S. Butterweck, of Temple University, and special workshop days were provided for teachers in aiding them to set up a curriculum to meet Pennsbury's needs. In addition, outstanding co- ordination among all schools and personnel groups was maintained. Three cheers for these excellent leaders. Exceptional mention must be made of the third body, the Parent-Teacher Association which has accom- plished much. Among their worthwhile enterprises have been the awarding of two scholarships, the pro- viding of a banquet for top-ranking students, the re- organizing ot bus routes, and the instituting of study groups to help parents to understand children's prob- lems. Who can believe that this group has only been in existence two years? Pennsbury is surely fortunate in having such inter- ested adults working for its welfare! This symbolic and abstract painting depicts the artist's conception of the faculty Represented by mature iull-grown branches, the teachers plant their knowledge in the minds of students symbolized in the form of a young sapling. In addition to knowledge instructors impart guidance and understanding. EPTEMBER 13, 1949, arrived and 568 students tripped out to start classes where they had left oft last Iune. We say 'lett off because this year's sections all had met the last week of last year tor Orientation Days - days when students met their new teachers and ac- tually began the work of the new year. Such days were an innovation that made for a smooth beginning of 1949-50. Among the new courses open to students this year were those in family relations, consumer education, salesmanship, and junior science. Continued was the popular course in Driver Education. In the junior division fgrades 7, 8, and 9l core type of instruction was instituted. Various subjects such as English and history were correlated to a certain extent as they were taught by the same teachers to the same students. It is expected that such instruction Will. be retained but intensified. In the senior division tgrades lO, ll, and l2l socialized procedure making use of committee Work, field trips, projects, panels, and such, was emphasized. Of special interest to the division was the obtaining of a home across from the Fallsington building as a Horne Eco- nomics cottage. Both boys and girls were utilized in repairing, furnishing, and decorating the home. It is also expected that the full time program in shop and home-making, newly introduced into the Yardley building this year, will continue, CUBISM-the breaking down of a surface into geometric shapes--served as the inspiration for the opposite artistic study. The subject depicted is a young girl seated at a desk. Looking closely, you will see how the girl's face and clothing, the desk, and the background have been reduced to their cubistic forms to make a pleasing design. Samuel DiNctcle. Senior Class President. President DiNutcle leads one of those worthwhile, though many times highly excited, clcrss meetings while ofiicers Gloria Pursell tsecretcrryt, Frcmk Fermro vice-presidentl, and Lydia Wieqcmd ttreasurerl sit in the front sects. Senior sponsors Mrs. L. Edwards and Miss P. Ronkin deserve cr real thunk you for their patience cnd help. They took up the club period time, which was the last period in the day, the time imme- diately after school, and sometimes evenings. ' The majority of clubs accepted from twenty-five to thirty members: so it was not always possible to get into a club of one's first choice. But for variety, there was no question. Some of the clubs, the names of which suggest the nature of their programs, were as follows: Gift, Commercial, Debate, Yearbook, Newspaper, Pho- tography, Science, Drama, Boys' and Girls' Athletic, Projectionist, Driver Training, Stagecraft, Library, Auto Mechanics, Art, Cheerleading, Model Aircraft, Plastic Arts, Boys' and Girls' Chorus, and Band. In addition, a vast interscholastic sports program was carried on. There were hockey, football, basketball, softball, baseball, and swimming teams. Most of these squads could use the facilities at the Makefield Ele- mentary School fmade necessary because neither the Fallsington nor Yardley buildings have gymnasiumsl, but some groups had to go elsewhere. The boys' bas- ketball teams had to travel to Parker School in Trenton for practices and for games, while the girls' swimming teams had to go to the Trenton Y.W.C.A. Mention must also be made of the plays and dances. Both the seniors and juniors each presented a drama. Unfortunately the yearbook deadline was too soon for us to catch the junior production. All the classes as well as the Parent-Teacher Association presented many dances throughout the months. There was the Senior Ball, the junior Prom, the Sophomore Christmas Ball, the Iunior Harvest Hop, the Sophomore Hop, the Fresh- man Hobo Dance, and the Saturday Night Canteen Dances. ln the vein of SURREALISM, the activities of the school are herewith repre- sented. Using the mask of tragedy, a baseball, a music note, a broken pencil, and a limp palette, the artist has placed these objects in a dream- like fantasy. 'the placing of the mask on a polished column illustrates the difficulties of reaching heights in drama. The limp palette shows the flexi- bility in the different media that art utilizes. The reader will also note an eye and a key. The first of these stands for an elert eye of a student, eager to partake of all school experiences: the latter of these, for the key to future opportunities. Note the intense avidity with which the busy ants are clamoring for a chance to touch the key. Completing the symbolism is the face of a limp watch to illustrate that time is flexible, according to how students make use of their talents. T His YEAR the student cstmcu was able to get off to a flying start because elections had been held at the end of the 1949 school year. Those elected to lead the Council were Robert Williams, President: Elwood Fritz, Vice-Presi- dent: Lucy Ragolia, Secretary, and Samuel Di- Natale, Treasurer. At the beginning of this school year nine homeroom representatives w e r e chosen and the Council convened with its ad- visor, Miss Mary Dwyer, early in September. The Council sponsored the first dance of the year on Friday, September 18, and then took up the direction ot the Saturday Night Canteen that was organized last year. ln the meantime, such activities as the Curtis Magazine Campaign and the sale of book covers helped to raise some necessary money. ln addition, to retain a record of various activities in picture form, the Council purchased for the Penn-Foto Club a professional flash camera. These tasks completed, plans were then made for an Alma Mater contest, provision of noon- hour activities, and lengthening of the lunch period.
