We have high hopes for you, our, young people. But something more than education and ability are necessary if you are to reach the supreme objectives of life. Charac- ter and the faith of God are necessary factors of a good life. Success is not a matter of position or possession. It is a frame of mind. It is the satisfying feeling of a life spent in a worth-while way, and a feeling of service rendered. Move forward with faith and courage. Seize your opportunities as they come and use your talents to make the most of them. Best wishes to all of you in finding real success! PENNS VALLEY HIGH, YOUR ALMA MATER, HAS FAITH IN YOU. 6 Mr. McCoy and Mr. Watts check over new equipment for the mechanical drawing class initiated in the school this year. .aascawzpm yu., 5. mea, One of the tests of a good education is how much it en- ables a student to go on living and learning under his own power. A high school should help a student to do what he can not do for himself. One of the marks of thq educated man is his capacity for independence, his per- sonal insights into meaning and value, his own ability to reason from given conclusions and his power to evaluate the many forces that play upon' him throughout life. It is our hope that students of Penns Valley Area High School will grow into this kind of self-reliance. 7 74e2amdof5 ' FIRST ROW: Russell Stover, C. E. Rishel, Kenneth Dutrow, john G. Her assigned areas include the elementary schools and the high school in the Penns Valley area, and the elementary schools in the State College Borough. The duties of a speech therapist include the surveying of classes for speech and hearing problemsg the diagnosing of these problemsg the administering of hearing tests to those students who are found to have a hearing lossg the referring of students, when necessary, to other professional persons or agenciesg and, of course, the carrying out of the remedial work in therapy sessions. In 1956, Mrs. I-lofecker was graduated from the Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Sci- ence degree. Her major there was speech therapy, and her minor was elementary education. This is the second year in which she has carried out a program in Penns Valley. I 53 dd 53535-EJ-?1i5,6 , - V1 I4 A , h I I f -Q1 fff , 1ff7: I K -'4 pVV , , . YEARBOOK Undertaking the task of publishing another edition of the Blue and White, the staff was given in- structions on the correct procedure in editing a yearbook. From there the staff eagerly chose a theme, Our Alma Mater. With the book progressing nicely, Patricia Breon and Mrs. Reed attended the Columbia Scholastic Press Association Convention, it was learned that our yearbook for 1958 had been judged and was awarded first prize in the 500 to 1000 enrollment division. Needless to say, we were all proud. This gave the literary staff, the businessb staff, and the advisors the incentive to try to pro- duce another award winning yearbook. NEWSPAPER Under the supervision of Mr. 'Bonnell, advisor, and Ann Wheeler, editor-in-chief, the newspaper staff has again provided the student body with a very enjoyable and informative year of publications. The special issues of the school year were dedicated to American Education Week, our seniors, and the Christ- mas season. 57 FIRST ROW: Franklin Stover, Ronald Ream, Dean Rossman, Tom Searfoss, John Schade. Student Council Representatives, chosen by classes and home rooms, meet regularly in an attempt to handle the job of regulating school functions, as well as making sports and academic decisions. The student coun- cil itself purchases records for student dances, sends fruit to hospitalized students, sponsors mixers after bas- ketball games, and conducts a United Fund Drive annually. Many recommendations for the welfare of the school are made by the Junior High Student Council and re- ferred to the Senior High Student Council for action. Also, the junior Council sponsored various parties through- out the school year. With lack of experience being one of the main factors, the Penns Valley Football team turned in a 1-4-1 record for the season. Making its only touchdown on a 95-yard kickoff runback by john Martz, the Rams dropped its first night game 43-6 at the hands of a powerful Capt. Jack team at Mt. Union. For the next night we traveled to Morris Township where we met a strong Blue Devil Team. Here we dropped a 32-O decision with lack of experience and penalties being the deciding factors. journeying next to Alexandria after two weeks practice, correcting our mistakes, we held our own against the Juniata 107 Valley squad with the final score ending in a 6-6 tie. In our first home game the Mingoes of Chief Logan ran up a 31-6 decision as Dick Wolfe dragged down a pass on the 20-yard line and loped across for the only touchdown of the game. Picking up its only win during the season, Penns Valley galloped over Southern Huntingdon to the tune of 20-6. The 20 points came from a Wolfe to Witmer pass, a line plunge by Bright, and an off tackle play by Searfoss. In the first Iron Bell game Penns Valley dropped a 40-O decision to the Bald Eagle squad after out- playing the visitors for one quarter. This year junior varsity football was inqoduced to Penns Valley. The team was composed of fresh- men, sophomores, and juniors. The one game was with the Bellefonte Junior Varsity in which Penns Valley sent Dick Wolfe over for two touchdowns during the fourth quarter to insure its 12-7 victory over Bellefonte. Preparing boys for varsity and junior varsity football is the aim of a junior high coach. We found much lacking in our squad, but there were bright points also. We traveled first to Chief Logan where the Rams found the Mingoes were too experienced and we dropped a 25-O verdict. Playing Bald Eagle at home, we battled on even terms for three quarters, but a pass cost the Rams the contest, score, Eagles 6, Rams O. Being host to Lock Haven, we found the Bobcats too strong and lost 26-7. Traveling to State College the Rams encountered an experienced Junior Lion team. The Lions recorded the victory 41-6. J Our varsity dribblers and shooters compiled a 5-14 record this season under the able leadership of Coach Edwards. Our predominately underclass lineup dropped a hotly disputed 46-45 decision in the season's lidlifter to Bald Eagle. Sweet revenge was gained one month later in the form of a 41-37 win on the Eagle's court. Two wins and an overtime loss coupled with the Bald Eagle games started the season spectacularly with the onset of Central Penn League action, Penns Valley's fortunes dropped. The Rams, along with the Mountaintoppers from Renovo, are the only class B schools in an otherwise A league. These two contested hotly for a position in the district class B play- offs. Two weeks after losing 66-32 at Lock Haven, we staged a dramatic comeback against the league champion Bobcats at home. The effort fell short 39-37 with Penns Valley in control of the ball at the final whistle. VARSITY BASKETBALL VARSITY BASKETBALL VARSITY BASKETBALL RAMS OPP. RAMS OPP. They have- attended football games, basketball games, and wrestling meets. They have kept smiles on their faces although we were not always victorious. Our younger cagers under the leadership of Breon Lauderbach completed their games with a 3-7 record. The Rams played Chief Logan at home, losing the first game 39-16. Then the Rams tried hard, but the Mingoes won a well-fought game 36-33. We are assured by Penns Valley's junior high branch of sports that we will have a firm foundation for years to come. 85 Q I Coach Humphreys, Junior Hook-185 Q4-35, Curt Bierly4165 Q7-1-lj, Allan Corl-154 Q2-LD, Earl Rudy-154 Q0-21, Dave Homan-154 Q2-OD, Larry Anderson-145 C1-6-11, Dennis Zerby-138 Q4-31, Dougie Reider-135 Q4-2-U, Don Rudy-133 C2-11, Lee Wolfe-127 C7-11, Roy Blair4120 10-2-15, Ernie Lucas-120 C2-25, Ronnie Ream-120 K0-31, Dean Rossman-112 Q5-3-15, Forrest Snare-103 K6-31, Dave Brown-95 Q0-51, Absent: Stover Musser- 95 Q0-21. Posting the first winning varsity season in any sport in Penns Valley's short history, the Ram grapplers showed a marked improvement over the preceding year in recording a 5-3-1 log. Coach -Humphreys has turned out a team of which Penns Valley can be proud. A tough State College team whitewashed the Rams in the season's opener, 46-0. Several of the bouts were close including Lee Wolfe's 4-2 loss to State Champ Dick Tressler and Dougie Reider's 3-2 loss to strong Gene Tressler. Bellefonte handed us a 39-13 decision in which Zerby wrestled well in scoring a third period fall. Moshannon Valley was the victim of the Rams first win by a 29-15 count. Dean Rossman and Ernie Lucas showed good wrestling ability as Rossman downed his foe by a fall and Lucas easily picked up a 5-0 decision. Traveling to Moshannon Valley for our second meet with the Black Knights, Dave Homan's fall proved to be the turning point in our 30-18 win. Picking up an extra meet with jersey Shore, we fought the Bulldogs to an exciting 22-22 stalemate. Curt Bierly, Forrest Snare, and Roy Blair wrestled well as Bierly defeated previously undefeated Gary Decker 7-3. Snare handily downed his opponent 7-0 and Blair held his contestant to a 2-2 draw. Junior Hook showed a lot of spirit and ability in pinning his larger opponent to help secure a 29-16 win over Chief Logan. Winning 7 of 11 bouts, Bald Eagle downed the Rams 31-11, Dougie Reider fought undefeated Tim Gates to a 2-2 draw. Aided by good performances by Brown, Don Rudy, Ream and Corl we moved past Sugar Valley's Canemen 25-18. Brown worked 2 reverses before he fell into one. Rudy looked good in recording a 6-2 win, Ream, moving up to 138, worked well before being pinned, and Corl dominated his foe in winning a 7-0 decision. BASEBALL 1959 While posting a 2-6 league record, the best Ram performance in three years of Central Counties League play, Penns Valley managed to slip out of the league basement. After dropping an S-2 exhibition game to Kishacoquillas, whom they outhit, Coach Gates's boys lost the league opener 8-2 to Philipsburg. Ron Eisenhart, john Schade, and Sam Bierly led our offensive at- tack against Bellefonte with one home run apiece. The Rams really put on their hitting clothes and trounced the Red Raiders 17-1. The following week we journeyed to State College and received a trouncing of our own 12-O. Playing a very loose defensive game paved the way for Bald Eagles 12-3 win in our home opener at the Old Fort. Eventual champ State College defeated us 6-1 as Sam Bierly did a fine job on the mound for the Rams. After leading for 31f2 innings at Wingate, the roof fell in and the Eagles of Bald Eagle went on to defeat us 10-2. Our weak defense again aided Philipsburg's Mountaintoppers to defeat us, 7-4 this time. Rich Weyman hurled the leagues only no-hitter this season as he defeated Bellefonte 7-2 in the league finale. Again errors hurt the Ram cause but Weyman's performance overshadowed this as he allowed no balls to be hit out of the infield and struck out 9 en route to his second win of the year. Ron Eisenhart led the team in batting average, hits, runs, and R.B.I.'s. His astronomical batting average of .545 also led the league. john Schade led the team in extra-base hits while Dick Weyman posted DICK WEYMAN a very respectable earned run average of 1.7 runs per game. The sermon, entitled What Is Your Authority? Who Gave It?, was delivered by Reverend Andrew H. Beahm. Other area ministers who participated were the Reverends Mr. Alan Seaman, Mr. William Walker, Mr. Elwood Williams, Mr. Charles Stevens, Mr. Dean Rupe. The high school chorus sang the anthem, How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place. Via jet, the class of 1959 took a trip around the world in eighty minutes. The trip was based on the theme, Around the World in Eighty Days. Lacking a wit, two half-wits CCurt Bierly and jim Bohnj conducted the tour from country to country. They were excellent guides. We started our trip in Holly- wood. From there we went to New York, Paris, with its street Cafes, and beautiful gowns, colorful Spain, wrestling in japan, and the dances and classrooms of Germany, all thrilled us as we toured. The last stop on our trip brought us to Hawaii. After we enjoyed one of their native dances, we all joined in singing Aloha. The trip had many high spots, but probably none will be remembered as long as the final stop-Penns Valley, our home. We all joined in singing to our great love, our Alma Mater. The seventh annual Commencement was held in the auditorium on May twenty-ninth. The welcome address was given by Lee Wolfe, Senior Class President. Area ministers participating in this service were Reverend Fred H. Irwin and Reverend Paul E. Miller. A piano duet, Andulucia, was played by Sandra Vonada and Ray Zeigler. A vocal duet, I'll Walk with God, was presented by Mary Spayd and Orvil Hosterman. The speaker of the evening was Dr. Roy Buck, of the Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Buck's subject was Day of Judgement. The graduating class was presented to the president of the area school board, john G. Meyer, by the high school principal, john E. McCoy. Mr. Meyer presented the individual members to the presi- dents of the local boards, who then awarded the diplomas to the class members.
