McHUGH, Principal In the days of international uncertainty in which we are living, there is a reluctance on the part of the mature to urge the youth of the world to go forth and strive for personal and national and international success, only to have such effort terminated by strife among countries. Leaders everywhere constantly warn young people of the destructive power of nuclear weapons and at the same time neglect to challenge them with the problem of the control of the newly attained knowledge. Our ancestors pushed back the frontiers of this nation with courage and with the will to succeed. These same qualities must characterize the efforts of the Class of 1957 in facing an equally arduous task-the exploration and control of the hereto- fore incomprehensible power of the atom. This is your challenge-go forth with a determination to surmount all obstacles to the beneficial use of this force for the welfare of all mankind. In all your worthy endeavors may success be yours. But we soon discovered that we were just beginning to climb another ladder. Our first rung was conquered as we settled down to the routine of our new environment, after being guests of honor at a Welcome Freshman Dance. -Upon electing Margaret Lipp as President, Alice Pearson as Vice President, Barbara Powell and Esther Featherer as Secretary and Treas- urer, respectively, under the sponsorship of Mr. Francis Thompson, we advanced another step in our ladder. This completed our first big year in high school. In September of our second year we began once more to ascend our ladder. With the help of our class sponsor, Mrs. Helen Allen, we chose as our officers Ursula Cates, President, June Callahan, Secretary, and Marsha Buncich, Treasurer, thus attaining one more notch in our ladder. Soon after the election, our Fashion Show took place with a great deal of success, add- ing another item to our progress. At the close of this year plans had been made for the Welcome Freshman Dance for the incoming freshmen of the.next year. Here we were, as Juniors, well on our way toward the top of our goal. Our past two years had been very successful and we hoped that this year would be just as successful. Aiding us with our class elections this year was Miss Marian Heaps, our class sponsor. After we elected Pat Pratta, President, Wayne Stretch, Vice Presi- dent, George Harbeson, Treas- urer, and Mary Ann Genovese, Secretary, we progressed a lit- tle more up the ladder. We put the second ,ledge of 'our junior year behind us after we received our class rings. When Christmas rolled around, we presented our class play, The Shepherd Who Came Late. The plans for the Prom, Fan- , HISTORY tasy in Pink, were well underway by this time, although it was not to take place until May. The Prom, being one of the most important units of our ladder, finally materialized and was one of the highlights of our entire school career. Since we started the year as mighty Seniors, we were nearing the last few positions of our lad- der which symbolized the steps in our education. Our officers for this year were President, Wil- liam Higginsg Vice President, Alex Rizzerg Treasurer, George Harbesong and Secretary, Grace Montagna. Under the counseling of Mrs. Virginia Davidson we ordered our class pictures. We were a little closer to the top of the ladder after the Senior Dance, 4'Lost Paradisef, was held. This was followed by the ordering of our name cards. After much preparation the Senior Play, Hlnner Willy, was presented. Perhaps the biggest event next to graduation was the class trip which took place in April. We will never forget it as long as we live. Finally, after the long struggle, the highest rung of our ladder was achieved . . . graduation. Although it was over, we knew that we had left a part of ourselves there and we would cherish forever the memories that we had had at Re Hi. cot - ascsoaau 'HGH SCH Ill' Qi WOHZmw MMPFO WOwZOwm '-I :- f'D .Q : Q9 - -. .. ... The members of the Class of 1957 have dem- onstrated the qualities of cooperation. responsibility. and leadership and have developed these at- tributes in a number of ways. The Senior Dance was an outstanding social function and showed how group cooperation can result in a most satisfying event. The Senior Play was a financial and artistic- success and displayed the results of leadership and responsibility. Since many adult qualities have already been acquired. it is natural to assume that the Class of 1957 will contribute their skills and talents to our community. With this in mind. I wish. as Class Sponsor. the greatest success possible in life for all of you. and I hope that you will continue in the future to use your natural talents to the best of your abilities. MRS.
