The picture of Mr, Pennell hanging on the office wall. Probably many have walked ínto the office of the principal without taking particular notice of the picture looking down on them. The pic- ture is of the founder of Pennell Institute, Major Henry Pennell. Mr. Pennell made possible through his generous contribution the construction of the original building in 1876, It has since become a landmark to all who approach the community or grow within it. The status of Pennell has undergone changes since 1876 in response to the needs and demands of the people of Gray. Its present status being: the athletic field donated in 1896 by the alumni, the Gymnasium erected in 1936, the Industrial Arts building added in 1950, and two new wings which were acquired in 1954,

CHRISTIE: SUPERINTENDENT To Students of Pennell - - - Each time I have had an opportunity to write a brief message for a high school yearbook I am filled with the same feeling of great envy of your position at the threshold of life in a challenging world, of your unlimited youthful opportunities to meet each challenge. My brief message to each of you is twofold. First, please pause long enough to think earnestly on making the most productive use of talents which you possess, and have the courage to develop some of these to the end that your work in life may be interesting. Also, so that you may have a happy as well as a productive life, in order to justify your existance in, and to pay for the privilege of being a part of a democratic society, pledge a part of Yourself to the greater well-being of others.
