HENDERSON Mr. Henderson has been at Pennell Institute for only two years. Yet in this short time, he has be- come a kind and understanding friend to all. His many services to the school range from donating his time to such projects as the yearbook and chaperoning dances to coaching softball. We the Junior Class sincerely feel that this is the recognition due Mr. Henderson by all the students of Pennell. Because of this we respectfully dedicate the 1961 Whirlpool to him. came T FOREWORD Time is the theme of our book. It was chosen largely because education is really a theme of our time. And thus our school and time become somewhat related. School is also a time of pleasant memories Which should be refreshed from time to time. We the | A composers of this book N sincerely hope that the 1961 Ко Whirlpool will serve now land, in years to come, as a Offic ient reminder of a wonderful year at Pennell. The picture of Mr, Pennell hanging on the office wall. Probably many have walked ínto the office of the principal without taking particular notice of the picture looking down on them. The pic- ture is of the founder of Pennell Institute, Major Henry Pennell. Mr. Pennell made possible through his generous contribution the construction of the original building in 1876, It has since become a landmark to all who approach the community or grow within it. The status of Pennell has undergone changes since 1876 in response to the needs and demands of the people of Gray. Its present status being: the athletic field donated in 1896 by the alumni, the Gymnasium erected in 1936, the Industrial Arts building added in 1950, and two new wings which were acquired in 1954, da Administration DONALD M. CHRISTIE: SUPERINTENDENT To Students of Pennell - - - Each time I have had an opportunity to write a brief message for a high school yearbook I am filled with the same feeling of great envy of your position at the threshold of life in a challenging world, of your unlimited youthful opportunities to meet each challenge. My brief message to each of you is twofold. First, please pause long enough to think earnestly on making the most productive use of talents which you possess, and have the courage to develop some of these to the end that your work in life may be interesting. Also, so that you may have a happy as well as a productive life, in order to justify your existance in, and to pay for the privilege of being a part of a democratic society, pledge a part of Yourself to the greater well-being of others. Donald Christie MR, HARRY C, BROWN: PRINCIPAL TO THE STUDENTS OF PENNELL INSTITUTE High “ 1001 days should be happy days. It is the time in life when students must not only study their lessons in the text books but also must realize that there is much more to going to high school. Here you must learn to get along with others. You must learn to compete with your fellow pupils in many ways; namely, in ranks, in athletics, in popularity, and so on. It is a time when you are develop- ing into the sort of individual which you are likely to be out in the world when your high school days are over. Most all of us by the time we are 18 years of age have formed habits by which we will live during our life time. The more habits of the right type we have, the better they will serve us during our life. I am thinking especially of such things as honesty, self reliance, habits of good speech, dress, personality, disposition, politeness, and the like. Webster defines habit as The ability or inclination to do something easily and unhesitatingly, acquired by constant repetition of an act or way of behaving. Harry C. Brown SECRETARY Mrs. Sumner Small There are always a few in every school system that contribute much to the efficiency of that school and are taken for granted by the students. The office sec- retary, Mrs. Sumner Small, keeps the all important school records, while Mr. Truman Prince, our ever present janitor, keeps our school in spotless condition. The bus drivers, Mr. John Doughty, Mr. Fredrick Adler, Mr. Maynard Barker, Mr. Cleveland Ward, and Mr. Ernest Ward see that we get to and from school safely. They also volunteer their services to take the spectators and players to the basketball games. The late Mrs. Caswell, mothered us all. She struggled that winter with our boots and those contrary jacket zippers. Going to hot lunch was a lark. Our teacher marched us to Stimson Hall like a little band of soldiers. Our group passed the test of adjusting to school and the next fall assembled in Miss Clifford's first grade. By now we had learned to wait for the School Boy-Patrol to help us cross the highway. We must have been an unusually bright and lovable crowd, for Miss Clifford moved with us to the second grade. We attended grades three through seven at the Russell School with the exception of half a year at Hancock School in the sixth grade. Each year for three years our school put on a group program at Newbegin Gym. These programs were great favorites of the townspeople. Our large playground at Russell School, gave us a chance for baseball, football, and later basketball. When we moved to Pennell for our eighth grade the first few weeks seemed to be continous bell- ringing. There, our original little band continued to be active in athletics and many other high-school activities. It is our wish, that every class that follows will gather, along the way, memories as varied and pleasant as those we-have found. Paul Doughty, Class of 1961 20 JUNIOR CLASS FIRST ROW: М. Verrill, В. The theme of the dance was Deep Purple, and the gym was decorated accordingly. Deep purple and lavender streamers went from the center of the ceiling to the walls to produce a sweeping effect, A garden wall decorated the stage with a silver moon in the background, The lights were tinted to a soft lavender spreading purple light throughout. The tables were decorated with deep purple streamers and white flowers and were in caberet style, 30 PROM The hostesses, Elaine Bent, Barbara Libby, and Sharon Preble, presented programs and served refresh- ments. The gymnasium was decorated in blue and white. The streamers extended around the gym walls and across the ceiling. Mike Norton, who had been previously scheduled to appear at the reception was unable to attend, and was replaced by Dick Dowd. Due to the extra large class of freshmen, there was a great deal of work to do this year, but from the results of the occasion the extra work was worth it, Most of the freshman students were paired off for the stunts due to the lack of time, but this organization of students proved to be very entertaining. The main purpose of the student council is to find new ways in which to make our school a better one to attend and to inforce new rules that will Mr. Brown, principal and Student Council help maintain high standards for our school. At each of these meetings we have tried to think of things that will help, such as having monitors in the halls to keep them more orderly. We also sent three of our student council to a regional convention at Cape Elizabeth. We are hoping for a very successful year again next fall. Advisor. The duty of this club is the publishing of the Pennell Pen. We also have one or two social events during the year, The club donated to the school an Underwood Calculator last year. This year we bought quite a number of records for use in building speed in shorthand and typing. We hope to improve the training of the members of the Business Department through the activities of the club and as a result of the equipment we have presented to Pennell. The Pennell Pen is pub- lished quarterly by the mem- bers of the Business Education Department. This paper con- tains news of Pennell in the areas of sports, class news, literary achievements, honor rolls, and clubs. The students are informed through this medium as to Pennell's ac- tivities. We improved greatly over last season's record with a total of five wins and seven losses. We also gave the Alumni quite a beating. Every member tried hard and played the game with all the knowledge Mr. McLaughlin had taught them. Teamwork was the basic factor in our victories although we had some outstanding plays made by Becky Cole. t 4 1 49 VARSITY BASKETBALL FIRST ROW: E, Austin, С. Jones, H. Lawler, С. Swett, W. Sandra Liberty, Margaret Verrill, Bonnie Richard, Shirley Lewis, Sally Kimball, Carol Swett, The cheerleaders did a wonderful job this year keeping the team and spectators in good spirits. 50 In this, the second year under the able coaching of Mr. Pepin was produced one of the best basketball teams ever to come from Pen- nell. Winning 18 games and losing only two in seasonal play, the team clinched the triple C Inland Division Championship. It boasted a 70 point average for its twenty games. A high point of the seasonal play was the second game with North Yarmouth Academy. N.Y.A. had won the first of the two games by a close 54-50. In the second game о N.Y.A.'s court the rams proved too much for them. In the fourth quarter Pennell scored 21 points against Yarmouth's 3 to make a final victory of 43-29. 51 PENNELL WINS CLASS M STATE TITLE PENNELL 80 STANDISH PENNELL JAY PENNELL ' MT. PENNELL RANGERS Our rifle team has had a fairly good season. We have entered one team in the Pine Tree Rifle Pistol Association. Our match manager has placed our team in the first group along with large schools such as Morse High, Bangor High, and N.Y.A. In spite of this handicap, we have done quite well thanks to Mr, Tobin's guidance. We are now preparing for our annual tournament at Fort Williams. This tournament is sponsored by the National Rifle Association.
