کو МЕР ۱ А ۳ de ( y | Pennell Institute к. Тһе main building of Pennell Institute was built by Major Henry Pennell in the fall of 1876. Little more was done on the building for the next five years. In his will, Major Pennell left to the Town of Gray, the building and lot, along with a trust fund of $5,000 for library and laboratory equipment. He also set up a board of four perma- nent trustees to run the school with the three Selectmen. The school opened in 1886 with an enrollmentof122students. The first graduation was held on May 31, 1889, at the Congregational Church. The Class of 1889 graduated six students. A separate building was needed for a laboratory, and this need was temporarily satisfied by buying a small building which stood where the late Dr. Beck's house now is. The Trustees reported in the 1900 Town Report, that they had raised $1,860 to be expended in building a laboratory, and this was immediately done. In 1896, the athletic field was given to the school by the Alumni. In 1936, George Newbegin willed $15,000 to the town for a gymnasium. The town managed to get a grant of $14,000 from the W.P.A. The town raised the remaining sum for the $34,000 building, and it was completed in November, 1937. In 1950, the town built the Industrial Arts Building at a cost of $10,000. The need for more classrooms was soon realized, and the town appropriated $120,411 for the new wing іп 1954. The first Whirlpool was published in 1919. Since then it has been a catalogue of pleasant memories to all of Pennell's Alumni. The Whirlpool Staff of 1960 sincerely hopes that this yearbook will help each student to remember his schooldays in the coming years.
