KNOWLES To a teacher whose love of sportsmanship and whose dedicated service in our behalf have placed him high in our esteem, we dedicate this book. 2 minidf an I g 5 7 n F rf R. wg Mr. Blanchard Progressive is the word we like to use to describe the achievements of Mr. Blanchard, our principal for three and one- half years. Under his leadership, Pennell Institute has gone steadily forward in educational standards. He organized the Student Coun- cil, the National Honor Society and initiated a testing and guid- ance program. Recently Pennell was elected to membership in the New England Association of College and Secondary Schools. It is with regret that we bid him farewell. He will attend the University of Maine this spring semester where he will receive a master's degree in June. Following that he expects to study at Harvard for his doctorate. The best wishes of the student body and the faculty go with him and his family. 4 Mr. Brown To the Seniors: My sincere wish to you is that you have accomplished the goals that you have set up for yourselves while in high school. lt is generally accepted that one gets out of life as much as they are willing to put into it. This, of course, is up to the individual. We, in America, have been criticized quite severely during the last few years because Russia was surpassing us in education. Many people were upset and as a result, our science and mathematic classes have been given much thought and, no doubt, have im- proved. lt is my belief that we are doing a fine job in teaching ALL youth in our schools. However, l would like to point out that you young people must perhaps learn to do better in leaming to think for yourselves. It isn't safe or desirable to be misled by those who are willing to think for you. We all enjoy much freedom in this wonderful country of ours. It is up to you young people to pre- serve our way of life. 5 DEREK F. BROWN Boston University A.A. and B A English French General Science Senior Class Advisor Whirlpool Advisor ELIZABETH R. We have already put on several successful events, and as the year progresses we are planning more. The senior class has spent four pleasurable and productive years at Pennell and we will be sorry to leave. We wish to thank everyone who has helped us in our endeavors and has supported our projects. 15 MEMGRIAM DANIEL KENNETH WOOD The members of the class of 1960 wish to have this page in memory of Daniel Kenneth Wood. Of the thirteen years of his life, seven of them were spent with us, his classmates. He was truly a friend to all who knew him, and his death has left a vacant spot in, our class. 16 5 ff JU IOR CLASS FRONT ROW: B. MacDonald, L. Walker, E. Gordon, J. Leavitt, K. Here he works on Charlie Humphrey and Richard Sawyer. 2 M Lost Horizon was a play that told the story of a lamasery or monastary called Shangri-La and the experience that four people from the outside world had when they were brought to it. Shangri-La is an almost utopian society. The people who populate the lamasery and the valley below live far beyond the normal life span and because of this the lamasery 's founder uses Shangri-La to preserve the cultures of the civilized world from a great destructive war which he is sure will occur. N Conway, Mallison, Miss Brinklow, and Barnard are J brought to Shangri-La to contribute to and perpetuate the culture the High Lama hopes to preserve. 29 The High Lama reveals to Conway the mystery of Shangri-La. We collected food enough for twenty-six food baskets for the needy people of Gray at Christmas time. We held a Big Deer Contest last fall and presented a 22 caliber rifle to the winner. We were in two dual meets and the Triple C champion- ship meet. We won our first dual meet from N. Y. A. 49 to 40. We lost our second to Oxford 48 to 41. We were fourth in the Triple C with 21.5 points. Steve Ross' track shoes scored 8 points--Ross wore them in his winning high jump effort, Stan Wilbur took third in the 880 in them, and Bill Liberty took fourth in the 220. George Durgin won a startling first in the broad jump and Bernard Ducy managed a first place tie in the pole vault. Morris Beal and Gordon Leavitt in the discus finished out the Pennell scoring. Because of last year 's record and our flashing start this year, we won two and lost none. Our match manager placed our team in division one. This division contains the higher bracket of teams in the state. This division includes such schools as, Bangor High, Water- ville High, Morse High, and several others. Actually, the only team that defeated us was Morse High by a score of 907 to 918. As you can see certainly a close margin. Our official season is now over, and we are preparing for the N. R. A. QNATIONAL RIFLE ASSOCIATIONJ tournament at Fort Williams to be shot the last Saturday of February and the first Sunday in March. 53 'J and B. Verrill. :ds - N M. Kenney, G. Mongeau O. Nichols D.
