We, the class of 1959, have chosen to extend to her, our deepest appreciation. 2 APPRECIATIO To Mr, Clayton Storer, who offers a helping hand to all we wish to express our appreciation, He not only proved to be a fine advisor to our class during the Freshman year at Pennell, but also a lasting friend, We wish to extend our highest respect, 3 4 i Foreword As we, the Class of 1959, launch this momentous project, we realize that this is a book of memories written by and for the students of Pennell Institute, This, then, is your book with your accomplishments, activities, and pleasant recollections, To this end, we have decided that the theme Should be, Cars , Cars are becoming an increasingly important phase of student life at Pennell, They are used for the conveyance of the many athletic teams and their fans from point A to point B, Cars are used for transportation to and from school, As a whole, the faculty and student body are making cars more and more a part of school life, This is advantageous, for it shows in driving, the student is accepting more adult responsibility than has been the case, The school is comparable to a car with our principal at the wheel, The driving force, or the engine, is composed of the faculty sending us to higher things, The chassis is as the student body that has been designed and molded by their parents and teachers, The wheels are the j3l'liI01'S cooks, and friends, all necessary to keep the school running smoothly, On the basis of the aforesaid, we build our, WHIRLPOOL 1958 . The varsity squad had a winning record this season for the first time in a number of years. Pennell finished with an over all record of ten wins and eight losses. Our Coach, Mr. Knowles put in much time and effort. The larger part of the team's success is due to him. One of the high points of the season was during our annual Christmas vacation road nip, when we handed Bingham its only loss by ten points. Another was the final game against Windham in which we rtilligd in the final quarter to defeat them and climb into a three way tie for second in our division of e rip e C. Pennell was fourth seeded in the regional Tournament and drew a bye for the first round. In the second round we played Falmouth. The lead changed nine times and we finally lost by one point in the final ten seconds. Of this year's varsity, five are seniors and four were regulars. Bill Ayer showed his spurs to many a potential rebound, and in doing so salted away many points Big Charlie Humphrey also was always in the thick of the game. In the Maine Rifle and Pistol Association, Pennell entered two teams. They were teams A and B , The teams are chosen by putting the top seven shooters on the A team and the remainder on the B team, We have the A team entered in the NRA monthly matches, The team has thus far fired in four matches. The results of our standings are to be announced sometime after the book will have gone to press. Target shooting is a form of competition that, in the opinion of the par ticipants, has no equal, It takes cool nerves and a good eye to fire a satisfying score. It affords enjoyment to those who don't go out for contact sports as well as those who are athletes. KNEHING, left to rights S.Wilbur, R. Sawyer, C. Humphrey, G. Leavitt, B. Preble. The pitchers, Arthur Thurlow, Stanley Wilbur, Bobby Mains, and Frank Davis, the catchers, Roy Lord, Maurice Beal, and Charles Humphrey, started work a week early. The rest of the team put through the grinder for a month before games got under way. They got fairly use to the taunts thrown by the coach. All this procedure, however, prepared a team that was able to upset Falmouth. We are losing six of our members this year. They are: David Conley, Stan Wilbur, Charlie Caswell, M. Let days seem bright or dreary, Let things go right or wrong, We'll sing with cheerful hearts The words of this old song. Midst schools of all nations Ours has done its part, Both for men in service And loyalty in heart. And as the Nation's banner Unfurls among the trees We love the flag of service That floats upon the breeze. Chorus: We have come here day by day As the hours pass away Every year here brings us nearer To the time when we shall part, Care and Sadness in our hearts, We will think of the days spent here 62 F AREWELL In the Foreward, the word Momentous was used. I used momentous to refer to the great task of assembling the yearbook for publication. However, after drawing to a close the activities of this staff, we all realize it was indeed a momentous task thoroughly enjoyable and satisfying. The staff stuck by us through the roughest, and, Prestol after much hard work by Mr. Tower, our adviser, and the staff, we completed this book.
