To us, these figures are interesting in that they show how the states compare with each other in many important financial ohases of educational matters, To be very specific in some of these matters the table shows that Main 1з 3958 from the top in its cur- rent educational expenditures per сар- ital, with $26 as compared to tne nat- Sonal average of $33. Rated on current expenditures per pupil, compared to зем York's $32l and Mississippi's $85. In expenditures per class room, including teacher's salaries, instruct- lonal equipment and maintenance Maine ranks lj18t, The Mational average is $14,391 as compared to Maine's $ 2,662. In average salaries of classroom teachers, Maine is number 12 from the top. It's $2615 is will below Calif- ornia's $1,500 and well above Kentucky's ¥1,847. The National Education Ass- oclation recommends a minimun salary of $3,600 for classroom teachers. Maine youth averages pleted school years. one, it 1з 12.0 years Carolina only 7.6. 10.2 com- In Utah, number and in South In income per capita Maine ranks 31. In income per child of school age our state is number 30. Its relative financial effort made to support public schools places Maine in the number 33 spot. New Mexico leads the nation here and Rhode Island is last. What do the figures indicate? That there is a great difference of educational opportunity throughat our country for school children, The solu- tion to this problem would seem to lie in Federal assistance to those states that are financially unable to provide a sound educational program on their owne Every child м this country should have the right to an education. Only if our children become intelligent citizens can America hope to remain free and a leader among free nations. 22 Our Visit to Vermont Once when we were visiting Ver- mont on the steep, beautiful mountain Sides, where all the soil is so rich that you eat it for medicine, and wher4 the animals grow three times larger than thoses in Texas, a funny baby pis was born, Now the pigs of Vermont are а Large аз а car when full grown and are born as big аз а wheel-barrele This baby was funny because he looked about like the p'zs born in Texas; he was only a fc.t or so long and about two feet high. People came from far and wide to see and voice their opinions on why in that beautif- rich country a weakling like him should have been born, Well, it was a sin for a pig th: size to be born in a pen і Vermont; however, the farmer was not a rich ра: зо so he decided to see what he coul: find to feed the pig. After many day: of feeding it many of the best grair: all mixed with the soil from those lovely hills of Vermont the farmer Гс- the food did no good, Finally,as a ls: resort, the owner tried the grain mixe: with soil from all different state: starting with the West Coasts But Б: the time he reached New Hampshire, t= farmer said he was through, However, friend in Maine sent some soil. Ev: then the man said the pig wouldn't iz prove, but he agreed to feed the weakl: the Pine Tree earth. Well, today the farmer is rollin: in money because that good old Maine : made that pig grow until cit made those Vermont pigs look like a Pekine: beside a Great Dane, By the way, we went to visit 1: Vermont from our little farm in Maine, Carol Eaton m m. ux у == ec When the sun sinks low in the west And the birds all cease to sing, When the animals lie down to rest And the chick puts his head 'neath his wing, When all the noises cease | And the farmer closes his barn, When the world is filled with peace, | It 48 evening on the farm. When the plow is laid dow for the night And the cows are driven in, When the ви disappears from sight And the grain is put back in the bin, 7 И When the children cease their play And the horses look toward the barn, When the work is through for the day, It is evening on the farm. Janalyn Whitten 29 | ‘у. ж 27) 4 ј P ‘ д at 4 23 The Case of the Twanging Fence It was pitch dark and the moon was but a tiny slit in the sky. A summer breeze blew over the lake causing it to murmur. Six girlfriends and I were tak- ing a short cut to the cottage where we were staying. We were following a well-worn path that ran on the out- er edge of a boy's camp. We crept stealthily along fearful of being caught. A short distance away, twenty- five little campers sat Indian-fash- ion around a blazing campfire. And the man looked over and what did he see but а great big wolf, the counselor's voice rang clear in the night. The breathless silence that had settled around the campfire was bro- ken Бу a sharp 'twang! from the barbed wire fence that we were spanning hur- riedly. As twenty-five little faces and one big face turned toward the dir- ection of the sound, one of the girls caught the seat of her slacks on the fence. We all became totem poles. The voice went on, The big wolf crept slowly towards the men. Its eyes were blazing and its jaws were open and dripping.” 'Twang', rang out the fence as we finally unloosed the slacks. The totem-poles took form again. As the story-teller wen t on, the six forms came to life and tip-toed slowly down the path. I don't believe either party in- volved slept very soundly that night. The little campers were wondering if that was a wolf they heard over by the fence. And we were wondering if the man escaped from the jaws of the stalk- ing beast. Jane MacDonald 24 A Tube of Shaving Cream I а a tube of shaving cream. When I am new I lie on a store count- er waiting to be bought. I am bright and shiny with my new coat of paint. People pick me up and read е ага squeeze me to see if I am fresh. Then my weeks of misery begin; some- one has bought me. They take me on long trips and I get tossed around and dropped un- til I am sick to my insides. People are very thoughtless with me. I guess they don't think have feelings They take me out put me all over their of times I am left о сос long and am all dried up. Being slowly dried up is an awful way to cło, They cut me to pieces with their razors. After they are through with me they wash me down the drain. So you can see that I have a very miserable а а hor- rible life. I am sure that none of Чи would ever want to be treated аз am. f у tube and acos. А lot Next time you use me please use me carefully. I have but a short lifs to live; make it a more pleasant one, please. Paul Morrison The Wind As I lie in my quilted bed, I could hear the wind as Around the corner it sped. As the falien leaves whirled ina dizzy spin, I stopped to listen again, And cautiously pulled the quilts up under my chin. I listen as the old house groans and mutters, As the chilly October wind Rips and bangs its age old shutters, As it tears along it seems to whistle Whirling, from the house to the fields о tear the down from the unsuspecting thistle. The summer we loved so, is long past And even we know -- A thing so beautiful could never last. Lucy Ayer 25 | Front Row, left to right; T. Nea 1, D. Conley, D. Harmon, M, Kenny, L. Dunn, J. Hall .
