Innocence, self-interest, and shallowness have combined in Consciousness l to produce a massive flight from responsibility as shown in the present education system. Education focuses on self in harsh and narrow terms, forcing much self-represssion and allowing itself to be cut off from the larger community of man and nature. Each individual must go it alone, refusing to trust his neighbors, seeing another man's advantage as his loss, seeing the world as a rat race with no rewards to losers and having to accept all facts as they are presented with no questions asked. This gives rise to an attitude that assumes the human race is fundamentally bad, and that a struggle against one's fellow man is a natural condition. Education teaches a game . . .The game to be played is winning. Getting rich and power- ful are its results. There is no higher commu- nity that exists beyond each individual's self- ish appraisal of his own interests. Education shows that invention, machinery, and production are the equivalent of progress, material success is the road to happiness - Nature is beautiful but must be conquered and put to use . . . competition is the law. It proves that life is a harsh pursuit of individual self-interest. This mode of thought leads to the deep isolation and suspicion of others that is char- acteristic of Consciousness I. It gives more faith in winning than in love.
