Note: Leo Tolstoy in his epic novel, WAR and PEACE, presents Pierre, his chief protago- nist, as both a Russian aristocrat and a sensitive man aware of the beauties of nature and distressed with the cruelities man vents upon other men. While written over one hundred years ago about the wars and times of two hundred years ago, Piere appears to rep- resent in both mind and spirit the Con- sciousness llI level of his times while the existence of a SYSTEM apparently is a truism for any time and place. The brief statement of Pierre which appears below was speaking of the times of Napoleon and Czar Alexander but Pierre's words and thoughts also speak out against the unknown SYSTEM of the 1970fs--s . ,V K , , 4. R .I I , Pierre could not afterwards remember how he went, whether it was far, or in which directions. His,faculties.were'quite numbed, he was stupefied, and noticing nothing around him went on moving his legs as the others did til they all stopped and he stopped too: Theonly thoughtin his mind atthat time was: who was it thathad really sentenced him to death?rNot the men on the commission that had first examined him - not oneof them had wished to or, evidently, could have done it,slt was not Davout, who had looked at himein so' human away. ln another moment Davout would have realized that he was doing wrong, buttjust then the adjutant had come in and interrupted him. The adjutant,,al,so, had evidently had no evil intent though he might have refrained from' coming in. Then who was executing him, killing him, depriving him of life-+- him, Pierre, with all his memories, aspirations, hopes, and thoughts? Who was doing this? And Pierre felt that it was no one. A , . A lt was a system - a concurrence of circumstances. A system of some sortwas killing him -.Pierre- depriving him of life, of everything, annihilating him. k 4' . There it is! . . . It again! . . .said Pierre to himself, and an involuntary shudder ran down his spine. In the corporal's changed face, in the sound of his voice, in the stirring and deafening noise of the drums, he recognized that mysterious, callous force which compelled people against their will to kill their fellow men -- that force the effect of which he had witnessed during the execution. To fear or to try to escape that force, to address entreaties or exhortations to those who served as its tools, was useless. Leo Tolstoy- WAR and PEACE , I . E: JE il an IE -Af ga I gF ,.a 'dl I I V vi Cine the central aspects of Con- sciousness il is an acceptance of the priority of institutions, organizations and society plus a belief that the individual must tie his destiny to something larger than himself. He sees his own life in terms of progress through associa- tion vvith an organization in vvhich an established hierarchy and settled procedures are seen as necessary and valuable. A club does not accept any absolute liberty for the individual, rather, it regards all individual lib- erty as subject to overriding club interest. The belief is that the individual should do his best to fit himself into a function that is needed by the organization, subordinating himself to the requirement of his position. Clubs have been convinced that man's needs are best met by trying to DOMINATE experi- ence rather than being subjected to experi- ence. Consciousness ll sees life in terms of a fiercely competitive struggle. Clubs and orga- nizations vvant to terminate this struggle and make life perfectly regimented. Behind the sacrifice, individuality to organi- zation, there is a deep element of fear. The man vvho fails to play the game will be de- stroyed. lt is not possible to fight the system because the system is the source of one's existence. Throughout all of Consciousness ll runs the theme that clubs and organizations function best if they are planned, rationalized and administered. Consciousness ll believes in CONTROL. . 5 Ss , g.-ws My , Q Y f , ' F Q ggi Q . .Nw . H.., ' 'N' -1.1 v X '7f?guQu, f 51 'W sw Innocence, self-interest, and shallowness have combined in Consciousness l to produce a massive flight from responsibility as shown in the present education system. Education focuses on self in harsh and narrow terms, forcing much self-represssion and allowing itself to be cut off from the larger community of man and nature. Each individual must go it alone, refusing to trust his neighbors, seeing another man's advantage as his loss, seeing the world as a rat race with no rewards to losers and having to accept all facts as they are presented with no questions asked. This gives rise to an attitude that assumes the human race is fundamentally bad, and that a struggle against one's fellow man is a natural condition. Education teaches a game . . .The game to be played is winning. Getting rich and power- ful are its results. There is no higher commu- nity that exists beyond each individual's self- ish appraisal of his own interests. Education shows that invention, machinery, and production are the equivalent of progress, material success is the road to happiness - Nature is beautiful but must be conquered and put to use . . . competition is the law. It proves that life is a harsh pursuit of individual self-interest. This mode of thought leads to the deep isolation and suspicion of others that is char- acteristic of Consciousness I. It gives more faith in winning than in love. . Dr. leremiah Cameron . Dr. 'Dr. lohn K.
