The purpose of the P. T. A. is to promote understanding between parents and teachers and to give themanopportunity to discuss matters of mutual interest. This is done informally during the recreational hour. The most interesting programs of the year showed slides and a model of the new school building, presented members of the joint board, and a panel discussion on the benefits of the new school. The organization provided refreshments for the Christmas party! We extend best wishes to the P. T. A. for continued success in the years ahead. OFFICERS President . .... ..... M rs. Vincent T. Maybe the term screwy would better describe it. The set is that of a lounge room in a college assembly building. The topic of the hour is the new Dean, Charles Bradley Brown, whose arrival is momentarily expected. In pops a new student with the coincidental name Dean Brown. He's a plain, unvarnished American boy, simply unmindful of his many educational shortcomings, yet frank and breezy as youth can be. His name electrifies the group of students and then the fun market begins doing business. Dean is assigned one of the girls as his secretary. The Registrar persists in giving Dean an advance on his salary. Poor guy, he's thrown overboard in a maelstrom of riotous happenings that would be chaotically bewildering were it not that they are so cleverly knit together into a perfect story for high school players. When the real Dean comes along, he's mistakenly thought to be an escaped lunatic. Here's where the audience will laugh itself silly. Every character denotes youth, every part is custom-built for laughs, and romance abounds in its most elementary stages. It's the laugh sensation of the year. CLASS HISTORY The Junior Angels have been polishing their halos through another year, sparked by the boundless enthusiasm of their president, Bob Huselton. They began their activities by having a special dance on Valentine's Day called Candy Heart , which was quite an accomplishment, even for Angels . A number of successes followed this first one, such as the junior skate at Twin Willows and the bake sale. But the most important event on the calendar for the class of '55 was the Junior-Senior Prom. Give a rousing cheer and a lot of credit to Miss Hartzell, who sponsored this group of angelic beings, bringing them down to earth. Look out for the dynamic class of '55, next year's seniors. Rather heavenly!! Don't you think so? FIRST ROW, Left to Right: Joan LeFever, Patricia Tyo, Rivie Schles- inger, Audrey Schieder, Joyce McGeary, Donna Miller. CLASS HISTORY Spar-ked by the dynamic efforts and leadership of Mr. Ortman and class president, Carol DeWoody, the sophomore class fof '56, began a new school term for 1953-1954. The spark didn't fade even after the annual event, the Halloween Dance, left us weary and full of cider. We again shot ahead with new vigor, to introduce the great basketball abilities of several outstanding personalities of the class. They added to the strong, record-winning streak of the Junior Panthers and also to the pride of their classmates. Our biology class proved to be a nightmare to many of the weaker sex, when under the direction of Mr. White, we made quick work of many pre- served specimens, from grasshoppers to frog. The Glory Halo goes to Edward Ortman, who proved to be the electric current under the spark, which set the Sophies off on a memorable school year. Look for big things in the future from the class of 1956! CLAS S HISTORY In seventh grade, we were beginning to get accustomed to junior high life. We were a strong body of thirty-eight pupils under the leadership of Mrs. Bunyan. We elected for our president, Jean Jurincic. Under the leader- ship of Jean, we accomplished many things. We went on trips to the Heinz Factory, Cathedral of Learning, and K,D.K.A. Radio Station. Now as we look back on seventh grade, we are very proud of our past and of those who have contributed to our education. Our second big step was entering eighth grade. Our home room teacher was Mrs. Walder and our president, Florence Tackett. We changed our class flower from lily of the valley to carnation with aqua and silver as our colors. This year we welcomed to our class Ray Parker, Phyllis Ahner, and Viola Ervin. We are now freshmen and this year our president is Barbara Chambers. We all agree, she is indeed awonderful president. It was this year we decided what courses to take for future vocations. It was also this year, we were under the leadership of Mr. Herceg. With him, we learned many new things. Our freshman year was a strong class of thirty-seven. Our future goal is to do good work in all the fields we may enter. FRONT ROW: Patty Knock, Betty Succop, Cornelia Norton, Rosemary Vollmer, Joann Hughes, Margaret Fair, Fay Simpson, Joan Funkhouser, Betsy Reif. SECOND ROW: Janet Lockard, Mary Ann Crouch, Dolores Ann Weckerly, Janer Albert, Patty Smith, Darlene McCormick, Patty Callen, Janet Wible, Joyce Solomon, Betty Lou Brown, Mrs. Walker. THIRD ROW: Ronald Parker, Roy Simpson, Allen Tompkins, Tom Gile, John Prenovitz, John Tompkins, Wilbert Rodgers, Ronald McCor- mick, George Jordan, Daniel McGrath, Gerald Shipe. FOURTH ROW: Robert Abels, Frank Herman, Charles Dietrich, Glenn Schflerr, Neil Jamison, Regis Jorda.n, Bernard Birkbickler, Charles Lloyd, Howard Muranko, John Scholter, Kenneth Lackey, Anthony John, Richard Jones. CLASS HISTORY At first, our class consisted of seventeen students in Stewart Hall and five in Renfrew which made a total of twenty-two students. You wouldn't be- lieve our class was ever that small, for we now boast forty-seven studious members. In seventh grade, we had a wiener roast at Norton's. We also had a gym exhibition for the P.T.A. Eighth grade has been eventful, too. The winning of the peanut selling contest added to our treasury. We had a picnic for the teachers which turned out very well. Also a candy sale that was successful. Earlier in the school year, we had a wonderful wiener roast at the Weckerly's. FIRST ROW, Left to Right: Donald Dietrich, Karen LeFever, Patricia Morgain, Nancy Kennedy, Velma Hughes, Kendra Funkhouser, Alice Lackey, Shirley Tackett, Margaret Gillon, Sally Succop. SECOND ROW: Ronald Pflugh, Donald Hanst, Charles Hartzell, Kathy Stouffer, Patricia Lockard, Janet Blair, Nancy Graves, Emily Townsend, Janet Huselton, Nancy Rodgers, Albert Sefcek, William Bowser, David Gumper, Mrs. McNeillie. THIRD BOW: George Minto, Ronald Gilliland, Richard Marin, Gene Tiedt, Lee Miller, John White, Ronald Brown, George Fair, Raymond Fowler, Dwight Crowe. CLASS HISTORY On September 1, 1953, our seventh grade, consisting of seventeen girls and seventeen boys met in room seven with Mrs. McNeillie as our teacher and advisor. We often have competitive games in spelling and mathematics. Who wins? That's our secret. We have completed several projects and maps in our geography class. Our history project, which was under the supervision of our history teacher, Mr. Park. We had a very successful candy sale and came in second place in the peanut sale campaign. Perhaps some of us will make good salesmen. We have held two class parties, Christmas and Valentine's Day. We are always well represented at the basketball games. Karen LeFever was chosen as a junior high cheerleader a.nd Margaret Gillon as a substitute. John White and Ronald Brown play for the junior high team. i Qifflii ffiili-fi WWW .. . The 1953-54 basketball season will be remembered forever by all of us. Even though we didn't win the championship, we had one of the best records in the history of the school. Our 1953 record was surpassed only by the championship team of 1948-49. Two games will stand out in the memory of all Penn Township fans. The first one was the 46-41 victory over the defending champion Chicora tea.m, which knocked them out of contention. The other was a thrilling 59-54 victory, our last game, over Karns City, Class B champs of Butler County. We would like to show our appreciation to Loyal Park for his fine job of coaching. We would also like to thank Mr. White for his work as athletic director and coach. We would also like to include on this list, Bill Weckerly for his excellent job of handling publicity, Bill Richards for keeping time at all home games, Carl Hughes, John Smith, and Kenneth Lackey for helping as managers throughout the season. Our record for the 1953-54 season would be incomplete if we let the season records of Jim Scholter go unmentioned. Jim broke the season scoring record of our high school set by Don Hixon in the season of 1935-36. Jim scored 351 points this year to surpass Don's record of 326. Congratulations, Jim. We all will miss the graduating seniors, Jim Scholter, Ron Cooper, Al McGrath, and John Gilliland next year, but Coach Park has high hopes with letter- men Furl, Hughes, Pflugh, McCormick, James, and Wible returning. We would like to praise the players for a job well done, and in the following paragraph, we shall endeavor to give them the credit which they so justly deserve. Last of all, we wish to thank you, the Penn Township Basketball fan, for the loyal support you gave the team. We appreciate your patronage, and we shall do our best to produce basketball teams worthy of that support. Bob Huselton Nelson James Curt Wible Center Guard Forward NAME YEAR GAMES F.G F.T F. This year Penn Township had the best Junior Varsity team in the history of the school. They finished the season with a fine 21 and 1 record. Their only loss came at the hands of a good Karns City team in the final game of the season. Several of the Junior Varsity players hope to be on the Varsity next year and they should be a big help to the team. However, with high spirits, they set about to reorganize. Mr. White agreed to coach them and Mrs. Walker accompanied them to all of their games. Ruth Simpson was elected as captain of the team and she began their semi- successful season. They played the Alumni, Winfield, Mars, and Butler. The first string throughout the season were: Forwards, Dorothea Dietrich, Ruth Alice Weckerly, and Gloria Cooper, and guards, Arlene Bart- ley, Carol DeWoody, and Ruth Simpson. This year, Gloria Cooper established a new scoring record when she threw in 35 points at the Mars game although the team was defeated.
