Academic Programs 11 February 16th, 1859, sixty-nine stu- dents were greeted on the first day of classes at the Farmer's High School by the four faculty members. The newly- appointed President, Evan Pugh, did not arrive in State College until the following October. From these humble beginnings, the High School evolved into a college with the sign- ing of the Morrill Land-Grant Act three years later. After decades of expansion in faculty, curriculum and size, Penn State became a university in 1953 and attained interna- tional recognition as a center for research and instruction. The quality standards of the new School of Communications and the College of Health and Human Development added to the diversity of the University's academic programs, while our top ranking as a re- search institution added to our reputation.
