Downtown Traditions Tradition something in which the town, as well as the University, is rich. State College traditions-thev'rc in the places in town that have come to mean some- thing special to Penn State students. Early morning inhabitants of Hammond and the studios. Collcgianitcs. and other late night studiers all think of only one place when growling stomachs warn of the coming dawn the Penn Slate Diner. Still called the “NCD bv many students-a throwback to its New College Diner days—this diner is famous for its grilled stickics consumed during incoherent conversations and punchy giggling. Students seek the Corner Room with thoughts of a booth by the window and countless cups of coffee. Good conversation while you watch the world go by and the caffeine go down-that’s Corner Room tradition. When gift-buying time comes, students trek to the bookstores on College Avenue for Penn State memorabilia to please little sisters and brothers; and shop in the more intimate stores of South Allen Street and Beaver Avenue when more sophisticated gifts arc needed. It seems after we've graduated and come back as visiting alumni, our traditional meeting place will be the Tavern for dinner, where tine food is served in a relaxed atmosphere, rich in Penn State and State College tradition. Tradition-Penn State will mean to you not only “Eight on State” and the Nittanv Lion, but also those meeting places in town that were so much a part of your college days. Converted house State College Remembered Ask any graduating senior if he’s going to miss State College and chances are he'll nod yes. While many students spend the better part of four years grumbling about the inadequacies of “urban State College, most are likely to have found at least one quality of this college town that will endear it to them. Slate College is different things to different students. Some students see it as “munchic-orientcd, catering to a wide variety of moods and tastes. Thoughts of math equations easily turn to thoughts of donuts and pizza, and many a student is found at the counter of Mister Donut or Bell’s Greek Pizza when he ought to be at the reference desk of Pattee. To other students. Stale College is “line-oriented.’’ The most blatant example of this side of State College can be seen on any given day at Mid-State and Rosy, or in the bookstores at the beginning and end of any term. Still others arc impressed by “outer State College. Be it a drive to Meyer’s Dairy for their famed ice cream or a hike up Mount Nittany. these students have found a spot—away from the bustle of College and Beaver Avenues-which is dear to them.
