HEALTH. PH AND “What’s a Number Two card? the naive Ist-termer asked while being herded through the IM building. If only there were some way to prepare, really prepare, him for registration, but I suppose that would only take the fun out of it all. The 10th-tcrm-and-overs wouldn't be able to glare condescendingly and the lst- termers wouldn’t have that feeling of accomplishment when they finally realized that the colleges arc placed alphabetically around the gym. That first registration was the beginning of the reality of COLLEGE. Sure you’d gone through the motions of “going away to college’’ - bought a trunk, packed your belongings, driven in the family wagon up. down, or over to Penn State, found your dorm and unpacked - but that was all with Mom. Dad. or best friend's help. Granted, you braved the dining hall without family but you still had all the floormates and “OLs” around you in dorm territory. At registration, you were on your own, to face English 10 and Phys Ed 005 lines. To think those funny little computer course cards would take the form of 400 bodies in 111 Forum two days later - you didn’t quite make the connection. The course cards were only the beginning - they led to syllabi and midterms and class cuts and t-scores. By fourth term you KNEW what teachers to take for what classes; by seventh you had your special studying niche in Pattce; and by tenth you frequented the bars more than cither class or Pattee. Widmann drug More came to town during summer of 1978 They say the more things change, the more they stay the same. Ii seems that State College upholds this maxim very well, for although new buildings and businesses may be added downtown, the types of businesses never seem to vary much—most stores supply either munchies or amusement for the college stu- dent -you and me! Winter 1978 saw the opening of a renovated Train Station restaurant, complete with seating in an authentic caboose! The 1 rain Station both enlarged its scaling capacity and elaborated on the railroading theme, making it a classic in State College restau- rant architecture. Now Stare College hav a branch of the National Record Mart In Spring 1978. Wuv’s came to town, and beside it was a “facelift' on the ever popular Campus Casino, with room beneath for relocation of Schoolkids Records. Freshmen coming to Penn State in Fall 1978 weren't the only new kids in town. Widmann’s drug store and a branch of the National Record Mart, both located on College Avenue, had moved into State College. And along with finals at the end of fall term '78 came the opening of Pedro's—“the delicious taste of Ole Mexico”—providing another munch-out spot for study-crazed Penn Staters. These new places are really old friends- places to cat. drink and be merry-and escape the often grueling pace of college life. New Look 17
