After three years of studying at Puttee, seniors may have finally felt they hud mastered the library's complex shelving system. But fall term presented a surprise to these and to other students — Puttee Library had undergone a minor face lift. The Undergraduate Library, housed in Pattee's west wing, was eliminated, and volumes of literature were shelved in its place. Life sciences were expanded to include the second floor of the cast wing, and the social sciences grew to include more space within the old stacks. According to Murrey S. Martin. Associate Dean of Libraries, there were two major reasons for these changes. The first and more important of the two. Martin said, was the rapid growth in three major areas of the library's collection: literature, life sciences, and the social sciences. Each year the library adds close to 50,000 books to its collection, a total equivalent to almost a mile of shelving. he said. The main bulk of these volumes are in these three areas. A second reason for the changes was discovered after a review of the library’s structure. It was concluded that there was no longer adequate rationale for a separate section of the library designated for undergraduate study, Martin said. After this decision was reached, books from the Undergraduate Library were intershelved among the stacks, he added. Such a step allows for three to four years breathing space in the library's literature collection. Several other changes are now in the planning stages. Possibly these future renovations will allow the library to meet its ever-increasing needs for additional space, Martin said. - Cheryl J. iriPnrc The tri-annual Boucke sleep over. a frus- trating Penn State tradition, has become a thing of the past. Last fall, a new system was in- stituted by the Career Development and Place- ment Center in Boucke Building, for placing students in the job market. This system replaced the old first come, first served method which had often made it necessary for a student to spend a night in Boucke at the beginning of each term in order to sign up for an interview. According to ]. Phillip Bucher, coordinator of the program, the new system stresses individual qualifications as a prerequisite for obtaining a job interview. To participate in the program, a student must register at the beginning of or during the school year in which he desires interviews. Next he is asked to complete an Interview Request Form which serves as a type of resume and as an indication of career aspirations. On Monday of each week, campus interview notices are posted in Boucke; the interested student then submits a request form to each company with which he desires an interview. These forms arc reviewed by recruiters from each of the companies, who select the students they feel best meet their companies’ needs. Interviews are set up with these students through the placement office. We have gotten only positive feedback since the new system was started. said Bucher. Both students and recruiters feel it is a fairer, more professional way of doing things. — Cheryl J.
