In three years at Penn State we’ve had a number of varied student governments and leaders. Some of the USG Presidential races have been harrowing and controversial, others have been less eventful. Those involved with the campaign of Spring term 1976 say the race between Rick Glazier and W. T. Williams was as close as that between Carter and Ford. Issues were haggled in forums throughout the dorm areas and in the Collegian. Tn the end, W. T. pulled and won the election in which less than 50% of the students voted. Williams offered a multi-sided platform. An alternative newspaper was discussed, the idea formed from dissatisfaction with the Collegian. The proposal was studied and finally dropped, although a weekly tabloid of student organizations is presently being discussed. A student loan bureau, with easy student accessibility has been proposed, although many problems have been raised and must be solved before implementing the program. The question of cable TV in the dorms is still being studied by experts to determine the feasibility of the program. However, Williams' platform was not filled with failures; many of his suggestions have been instituted. A flea market was planned for three days in January. 1977, where the staff, faculty, and students would buy or sell anything they choose. Food stamps have been made available at the HUB. so students do not have to travel to Bellefonte for the service. Other than these specific services. USG’s committees have aided students in all facets of University life. A USG sponsored tuition rally was held in Spring on Old Main Lawn. In spite of the beautiful skies and shining sun. only 300 people came to listen and participate. Dion Stewart, the student trustee spoke, along with Helen Wise, the first member of the Board of Trustees to speak on an occasion like that. Alcohol hearings in response to another University action, the tightening of the alcohol policy on campus, were held by the USG. The policy and alternative actions to it were offered and discussed. Although varied answers, like having a sit-in protest over national TV at the Ohio State-Penn State game were hashed, the committee's conclusion was to work at lowering the drinking age at the state level by teaming with other Pennsylvania Universities and communication with local congressmen. Date Match ‘76. a service completely for students, was organized for the first time in Winter. By filling out varied interest forms and sending them with the appropriate fee. a lucky girl or guy might have met the sweetheart of her his dreams. A Date Match '76 dance was held following the computer service, as a casual meeting place for all the computer selectees. Even if only a few met their dream. Date Match was a lot of fun. USG has always had the students, their needs and problems, as top priority when dealing with the University and its lawmakers. The student government works on all levels, the college, the local and the state, to constantly improve our existing systems. ELECTIONS Candidates: (top) Rick Glazier. W. T. Williams.
