Freshmen, football make framework That Fall term at Penn State has its own special framework is not a new thought. Changing times and changing people seem to make one Fall term different from the last one, or the next one, but times and people and styles are subject matter and the basic framework still stays standing. Registration puts the student back into the reality of campus life, sometimes after a rather hazy summer. Some old friends make it back, some don't; there are 5,798 new faces and 20,502 old faces of people that everyone sees for three years but still doesn't know who they are. If a survey was taken, football would rank highest on the list of popular events. The fans insist not only upon watching the game, but also upon seeing the doggie man in his infamous splendor even if it means sitting through the pouring rain. And it is needless to mention that pouring rain does not limit itself to the days of football games. The concerts and plays and movies all have different names than last year: Mayall, Melanie, It's A Beautiful Day and a touring Superstar cast all come to Penn State. Maybe the parties involve varied activity in comparison with other times, but Happy Valley keeps its reputation. The bars are regularly crowded on Wednesday and Friday nights and Ritenour is still the best place to go if the desire is to wait in line to be healed. The NCD is a name that hasn't changed: a haven for insomniacs and the all-nighter crowd. Night lights never stop burning and Hammond, dorm and apartment in- habitants are all involved in what is supposed to be the major purpose of the Uni- versity: education. Wells Keddie, jim Lange, HOPS, student voting: these are the major issues of the term. Other new things to think about are brown matric cards with photos in living color, the improved and easier method of pre-registering for the courses no one ever seems to get anyway, and the rising structures that will eventually make Shields Building the center of campus. And of course, there is always the world to think about, even in the isolation of State College. It may well be that Fall term doesn't change its framework too much from year to year, but to those who know it, Fall term is a special time, a now time at Penn State. 16
