Dr. Walker was born in Long Eaton, England, moved to Canada at the age of ten. and attended public schools in Wrightsville, Pa. He then went on to Harvard where he earned his bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering, master of science degree in busi- ness administration, and doctor of science degree in engineering and general science. He came to Penn State following World War II with the Ordnance Research Laboratory and served as pro- fessor and head of the Department of Electrical Engi- neering until 1951 when he was named dean of the Col- lege of Engineering and Architecture. In 1956 Dr. Walker succeeded Milton Eisenhower as University President, and in the last fourteen years here has brought profound growth and change to Penn State. Of the 120,000 students graduated by the University since it was chartered in 1855, about one half have re- ceived their degrees since Eric Walker assumed presi- dential office. Under Walker's term of office were established the four-term system; the counseling system which has given Penn State one of the lowest acSdemic failure rates in the nation; interdisciplinary institutes to work on many problems facing today’s society; and an in- creased emphasis on the arts, humanities, and social sciences. It is with thanks for what President Walker has ac- complished at Penn State that La Vie wishes him the best in his future endeavors.
