Almost from the time of the chartering 0f the University as The Farmch High School in 1855 research has been an important part of thc program of the University. and today it is conducted with an annual budget that approximates $35.000 000. While it arises from the desire of faculty members to push forward the frontiers of knowledge. it provides the necessary training for grad- uate students and the information needed by agriculture, industry. and government. Much of thc rcscurch today is geared to the welfare of man. whether it concerns urban social problems. clean streams and reduction of air pollution, better methods of teaching. or studies related to the health of man. Coordination of research policies and programs is accomplished through the Oflicc of the Vice President for Research, the Senate Re- search Policy Committee, and the Administrative Committee on Re- search.
