3O HAROLD K. SCHILLING Dean The first graduate work was offered in 1862 and led to the degree of Mas- ter of Scientific Agriculture. For some time there were few grad- uate students and graduate instruction was relatively unorganized so that it was not until 1922 that the Graduate School was formally established. The first doctor of philosophy degree was conferred in 1924. The Graduate School has been grow- ing both in enrollment and in the pro- gram offered, There are approximate- ly 2,230 students enrolled for advanced work and degrees are offered in ninety different fields of study. Seventy of these areas lead to the doctoral degree. The Graduate School faculty, com- posed of about 660 members, controls all academic matters pertaining to the Graduate School. The Graduate Stu- dent Association promotes the social and the academic interests of the grad- uate students. For students seeking financial aid, there are various assistantships, coun- selorships, fellowships, and scholar- ships open to graduate students. To meet the needs of graduate stu- dents, the University during the past year completed 216 apartment units for married graduate students and two residence halls have been made avail- able for unmarried graduate students. Dr. Harold K. Schilling serves as dean of the Graduate School.
