ERIC A. WALKER President, The Pennsylvania State University To the Class of l96l: Through the years, these pages will give you many hours of pleasure. They will remind you of the classmates with whom you shared the thrill of learning, the agonies of bluebooks, the excitement of athletic contests, the stimulation of visiting lecturers and distinguished artists. They will remind you of a sort of life you will never again be able to capture completelyaa life spent in association with people of your own age, seeking goals common to all and relaxing in common recreations. It is a life as nearly ideal as our society affords to anyone. But I hope these pages will remind you of more than this. I hope they will remind you that, as a student at Penn State, you were participating in one of the noblest experiments that man has ever devisedean experiment based on the faith that men, through education, can grow in wisdom and knowledge in order to govern themselves 24 with freedom and dignity. Those who would participate in good faith in this experiment must look upon education not as an ornament nor as means of personal advance- ment but as an instrument for advancing the general well-being of all people. Let us hope that, when you review these pages in the years ahead, you will find the world a better place in which to live and to work. If you do, your review will give you more than a feeling of nostalgic pleasure. It will serve to prove the soundness of the hypothesis. The experiment will have been successful. Perhaps then we can set out with confidence and determination to achieve freedom and dignity for all men, to make it possible for all people to live in honor and selferespect.
