FOREWORD This is Penn Stote-o growing, changing University. One hundred years ago, Dr. Evan Pugh, the first president, and a faculty of five guided the unsure steps of The Farmers' High School of Pennsylvania which during that first year en- rolled a total of 1 l9 students. Today, the faculty and administrative staff guide the edu- cational programs of nearly 20,400 Penn State students. With new and changing fields of study and expanding physical facilities, the University strives. to meet the needs of the Commonwealth in the field of higher education ea need most apparent in the growing numbers of high school students seeking admission to their State University. For the most of us, the days at Penn State are drawing to 0 close. It is our hope that this book, the 1960 LAVlE, will recall many of the eventful and pleasant days we knew at Penn State 4oys in which we were preparing for the positions of respon- sibility and leadership that we, as educated citizens, will be obligated to assume.
