Speidel has been wrestling euueh at Penn Stale. During those years, he has produced six undefeated teams, won seven Eastern Intercollegiate team titles, and in 1053, for the first and only time, brought the Nulienul Collegiate team title to the East. He mmpiied an amazin;r record of 151 wins. 30 defeats, and 10 draws in dual emnpeliliun. Born in Elizabeth. N. J., Speidel was in the ama- leur imxing ring,r hefure lumim,r his attention 10 wres- tling. He served as couch Hi the New York Athletic Club mat team before returning to his uhnu mater, Panzer College of Physical Education in East Orange, N. J. me there, he vame lo Penn Slate. He earned his lizlehelor of science and master of seiem'e degrees at Penn State. During World War 11. he was on leave of absence from Penn State to serve as a t,tmmnander in the U. S. Navy. He was eummendml for uem-eplionaliIv out- standing scrvieefi Charles Spcidel has heen honored as a Helms Amateur Wrestling Hall of Fame seleeliun. was named by Panzer College fur distinguished uehim'emenl, and twice was elected president of the Nalional Collegiate Wrestling Coaches, Association. We have chosen to honer him because of his luyaily and devotion lo Penn State and to the students uf Penn Slate during his more than 32 years as wres- tling coach and teacher. We take pride, therefore, in dedicating this, the 1958 LA VIE, to Charlie Speidel.
