Chartered on February 22, 1855 as The Farmers' High School of Pennsylvania, The Pennsylvania State Univer- sity was from the beginning a full-fledged college with a four-year program. The school opened its doors to the first class of 69 students on February 16, 1859, and while 119 came dur- ing the academic year which ended in December, there never were more than 100 enrolled at any one time. Students studied by the light of fat oil lamps in their sparsely furnished rooms. Their curriculum included three hours of manual labor per week so the would learn never to despise those who work with their hands. Their one building, Old Main, was far from com- pleted. With the passing of the Morrill Land-Crant Act in 1862, and the acceptance of the provisions of the Act by the Commonwealth in 1863, The Agricultural College of Pennsylvania, as the school was then known, was desig- nated the Land-Crant College of the Commonwealth. brief histor The Civil War and the depression that followed brought critical days for the struggling school. Enroll- ment dropped as low as 22 students and from the time of the death of the first president, Dr. Evan Pugh, in 1864, until the appointment of Dr. George W. Atherton in 1882, the college lacked a strong guiding hand. There were five presidents and two interim presidents during this 18-year period. The Agricultural College in 1874 became The Penn- sylvania State College, the name that continued until 1953 when the present title, The Pennsylvania State University, was adopted. The original grant of 200 acres has grown to a tract of 3,627 acres, which includes the beautiful campus of 236 acres. More than 140 major buildings are located on the campus, providing excellent residence hall, laboratory, and classroom facilities. Today, with an enrollment exceeding 15,350, includ- ing more than 12,650 students on the main campus, Penn State ranks tenth in the Nation in full-time enrollment, and is recognized as one of the leading institutions of high- er learning in the United States.
