It provided living accom- modations, classrooms, and laboratories. ONE hundred years ago, ilt :1 time when higher cdu- calion was primarily designed for gentlemen, the farmers of Pennsylvania projected a school uwherein every farm- er's son may receive a literary zmd professional education compatible with the dignity of agriculture.' The Agricultural Society of Pennsylvania met at Harrisburg in 1853 to begin the movement hr the school and two years later, on Feb. 22, 1855, the Farmers' High School of Pennsylvania was chartered. Condemned os unsafe, Old Main was razed and the stones were used to construct the present building in 1929-30. Old Main is used primarily for administrative offices. hovs contracted evil habits and to set the school apart from the classical colleges of the tune. But the practical farmers tot ' care that their sons would continue to work with their hands by provldmg in the charter for a farm on whlch students would do the labor and thus be instructed and taught 2111 thmgs b It neeessarv to be known by a l'arme . The Trustees planned a big, hve-story strueture for 400 students, but crop lullures and a hnanctal pamc made it diHieult to obtain the money. When the hrst school term started on Feb. 16, 1859, the 69 young men who reported on the opening day found the main building only oneethird completed. Sparsely furnished rooms, oil lamps, cold and drafty dining balls that had been the construction shacks, ' limited Classroom equipment and books were some of the obstacles to learning. The day began with reveille at 6 a. m., followed by breakfast and prayers. Mornings were devoted to Class- room instruction and afternoons to work on the farm or other Chores. Debates and discussions provided recrea- tlon.
