3:. I!: One of the primary functions of the College is research and all of the Schools conduct extensive research programs. In addition to providing facilie ties for training graduate students, the research programs advance the boundaries of knowledge in all fields. Research activities are supported by special grants from state and federal agencies, private in- dustries and foundations, and by funds from the College. Research in dairy breeding means increased Durlng the past year, the CounCIl on Research, milk production for doirymen administering the Central Fund for Research, ap- proved funds for the promotion of 46 specific research projects. Actual control of the research program is han- dled within each School of the College but the Council on Research publishes two important re- ports: Research in Progress and Publications and Research and Other Contributions of the Penn- sylvania State College. While a very large part of the College's total expenditures goes into the support of research, re- sults from the program far exceed the costs. The results have included increased production in agri- culture and industry, the development of new prod- ucts and new uses for old products, and important new discoveries that are vital to the national defense of the country. fmwaWe-uwu '1 $ Geochemist studies mineral synthesis at high pressures and temperatures .. vl I.
