SCHILLING Deon, Graduate School While graduate work has been offered by the College since 1861 when two students were candidates for the degree of master of seientihe agriculture, the Graduate School was not established until 1922. At that time, 177 graduate students were enrolled in 144 graduate courses taught by 103 faculty members. Today the Graduate School has an enrollment of more than 1,400 students and the 1,000 courses are taught by more than 500 Faculty members. Since 1861, 8.045 advanced degrees have been conferred by the College and during the year ending on August 31, 1952, 729 ad- vanced degrees, 113 of them doctorates, were 1221 - Assistant to the Dean S. TSCHAN Dean Aeronautical engineering is one of many fields for students taking graduate work Work of graduate students is closely supervised by members of the faculty Graduate School awarded. The growing number of degrees conferred and the general improvement of standards has elevated Penn State to a high position among the Graduate Schools of the country. Students from all parts of the world are attracted to Penn State for graduate work and during the past year, 81 foreign students were enrolled. The organization of a Graduate Research Club as a part of the activity of the School has helped students and faculty to learn of the important research conducted at Penn State in many diEerent fields. Research in physics provides opportunities for advanced work
