A native of Pottstmvn, Dean Hui1mzm re ceived his bachelor of science degree in me chanieal engineering in 1911 and his master of science degree in 1919. 111 1911, he was appointed an instructor in mechanical draw ing. From 1913 to 1916, he served on the facu1ty Of the American University of Beirut. Beirut, Syria, then taught three more years zit Penn State. and in 1919, was named As sistant Registrar. 110 became Registrar in 1923 and Dean of Admissions 11nd Registrar in 1948, from which position he retired with emeritus rank on Fehruzlry 28. 1949 .15 :m undergraduate, Dean 11111111111111 was J 1 9m 21 member 01 the lirst Froth staH and served on the art st111101 LAVIE. Serving on the fresh- man Stunt Committee, he received the title 011 gentleman educator of the freshmen. 11c has continued to serve as an educator 01' Freshmen, first as an instructor. and later 215 Registrar and Dean 011 Admissions. During the past 30 years, Dean 1101111111111 has admitted over 30,000 freshmen to Penn State. The high quality 01' the students en? 1011ed attests to the procedures hc devehiped 11nd practiced in selective admissions. 1n the 111111 01' 1946, Dean 110112111311 hc- camc administrator of the unique plan under which freshmen are admitted to Penn State, then assigned to other colleges and Penn State centers. Lust 1:311. 3821 freshmen were granted admission and assigned to 27 dif- lerent campuses. In 1939, the American Association 01' CO1 1egiate Registrars named Dean Honan as president, 21nd in 1947, in recognition of his service on the selection committee for the V-12 program, the U. S. Navy cited him for meriv torious service during World War 11. Dean 11011mnn was the First pledge to Zeta Zeta Chapter 01 Lamhda Chi Alpha and down through the years has maintained an active interest in the chapter. For 35 years he served as timekeeper for boxing, wrestling. and truck events. Since. 1911. he has lettered the names 011 more than 33,000 Students on their diplomas. 110 has seen graduating Classes grow from his own 1911 C1ass with 202 members to the Class 01' 1949 with more than 2-100 students.
