Here is your 1949 LAVIE. It is a record of you, the Class of 1949, of your undergraduate ac- tivities, and of your College. Our Class will be the last, probably for some time, to have completed four years on the Penn State campus. True, some of us began our col- lege years in 1941 or 1942, but as a Class, we were admitted to Penn State in 1945. The unique system of assigning freshmen to Penn State cen- ters or cooperating colleges for one year was in- troduced in 1946. It is but one of many Changes we have witnessed in these post-war years. 1 While the plan has enabled the College, to i serve more students and to attain a record enroll- ment of nearly 15,000 this year, it also marked the passing of freshman sports, the green hair ribbon and the dink, and other customs dear to the heart of every Penn Stater. The past year too has brought many Changes. A School of. Home Economics was established on January 1, 1949. Ten new buildings were un- der construction during the year and plans for others were underway. One-way streets were in- troduced to the crowded campus. The 1949 LAVIE staH? has attempted to chron- icle these Changes. We sincerely hope that in the 1 coming years this volume will bring back pleasant k memories of Heeting college days, memories of the I serious problems of our youth-which weren,t so serious after all.
