DEAN WHITMORE ClRocky,l to his old friendsl is one of those lovable fellows with Whom you can differ decidedly, argue earnestly, and come off With a sincere smile. He has won a place in the first rank of American organic chemists and maintains it notwithstanding executive duties. While building his School at Penn State on deep and broad foundations, he has somehow found time to advance chemistry through notable service as president, as director, and as chairman of important committees of the American Chemical Society. His profound interest in young chemists has been amply demonstrated and at the same time he has made substantial contributions to the state and the community. In all this Rocky does not: neglect his duties, his family, or his hobbies. He is quick to become interested in worth-while enterprises, partic- ularly if they are flavored With chemistry. Sincere, frank, and always ready to become really interested in the work and problems of others, it is not strange that he numbers so many both old and young among his friends. He well exemplifies the adage that to have a thing well done, get a busy man to do it. To know and admire him, one needs only to work with him. HARRISON E.
