By this is not meant the mere satisfying of such academic requirements as two courses, but rather the skill in language necessary to the adequate expression of thought. Such ob- vious deficiencies as bad grammar, inadequate vocabulary, bizarre spelling, or slovenly articulation and penmanship label the user as devoid of the truly indispensable tools of learning and communication. It is therefore the duty of every student to improve his English so that society may recognize him as an educated person. It is truly unfortunate that so many go forth unprepared in just this one respect. 28

Bernhard Of all the professions, none is broader in scope than engineering, and from its nature none makes greater de- mands of high character and ability on the part of those who practice it. It follows, therefore, that an engineeljs education should be broad in scope, fundamental rather than specialized in RGJImm-r E. L. 1mm nature, and above all else so sound and thorough as to produce only those having both the requisite degree of technical pro- ficiency and also the necessary qualities of integrity and breadth of vision. The School of Engineering holds the ful- filment of this purpose before it as its fundamental aim. B. K. Jolmstmm

The gallery comprises now 105 original oil paintings illustrating operations in Pennsylvaniak wide-spread, diver- sified mineral industries. We hope that the faculty and student body, as well as the vast army of visitors to the campus, will find in the gal- lery an eager interest in the mineral producingr and processing industries. The school is glad to oHer these colorful visual aids to a better understanding of Pennsylvaniak mineral in- dustrial wealth. 29 Donn I'Zdu'urtl Stehllo ll. IL Nurlllrup A. W. Guuger S. J.
