This is my tenth year at Penn State. These have been busy and happy years and have filled me with the conviction that no institution in the country has equal possibilities for de- velopment and growth. I am fortunate indeed to have the privilege of building on the foundations established by Deans Wendt, Stoddart, and Pond. Many of my extra-campus activities, notably those for the American Chemical Society, are drawing to a close. Thus, I shall have more time to enjoy and develop the opportunities of our small town and its growing institution. e e x K III I , r r rwrr , t rrr rrr rv-r - - 25 I. Donn F. C. Whitmore- W. R. Bernhard Of all the professions, none is broader in scope than engineering, and from its nature none makes greater de- mands of high character and ability on the part of those who practice it. It follows, therefore, that an engineeljs education should be broad in scope, fundamental rather than specialized in RGJImm-r E. L. 1mm nature, and above all else so sound and thorough as to produce only those having both the requisite degree of technical pro- ficiency and also the necessary qualities of integrity and breadth of vision. The School of Engineering holds the ful- filment of this purpose before it as its fundamental aim. B. K. Jolmstmm
