This is my tenth year at Penn State. These have been busy and happy years and have filled me with the conviction that no institution in the country has equal possibilities for de- velopment and growth. I am fortunate indeed to have the privilege of building on the foundations established by Deans Wendt, Stoddart, and Pond. Many of my extra-campus activities, notably those for the American Chemical Society, are drawing to a close. Thus, I shall have more time to enjoy and develop the opportunities of our small town and its growing institution. e e x K III I , r r rwrr , t rrr rrr rv-r - - 25 I. Donn F. C. Whitmore- W. R. This results, in part, from the nature of its program but also, in equal measure, from the point of view of its leaders. The School of Agriculture is characterized by a friendly v. Beede spirit, the practical nature of its program, and devotion to ' public service. The retiring Dean, Ralph L. Watts, has had a paramount inHuence in these respects. The friendly and co-operative spirit of Ag Hill, faculty and students alike, is due in large measure to his example. A successful farmer himself before becoming Dean, he has constantly urged his L. n. I'urhes. colleagues to thkeep their feet on the ground? His own life has exemplified the public service ideal of the School. He has built himself into the College that he loves. H. C. Knnndnl E. II. Dushzun 24
