DEDICATION ITH the departure of the Class of '39, there will terminate the active professional duties of three out- standingly popular men, three men who have in their periods of service bridged the gap between the Old Penn State and the New Penn State, three men whose contributions will never be forgotten and whose memory will enter the sanctity accorded to past Penn State greats! These men, Dean Ralph L. Watts, Professor Elton 'D. Walker, and HMajor W. O. CtTommy'Q Thompson, have compiled between them 95 years of service. FOREWORD T IS difficult for the ordinary senior to imagine the great changes that have transformed the Pennsylvania State College from a small, isolated school into a modern and progressive institution. Ordinary growth is slow, subtle, and obscured by time; no one realizes that growth is taking place. And so it has been in the past with Penn State. The past year, however, has seen a revitalized, energetic growthebefore our eyes buildings have sprung from torn and twisted craters. Giant shovels have scooped and torn away the earth. F amiliar landspvots have fallen before the on- slaught of modern machinery and a thousand workmen. The valley has echoed the thunder of dynamite blastings and the sense- -stifling roar of riveting hammers. And yet we like to think thatEWith all this great change some. thing of the old Penn State Will itemain. Perhaps not physically visible, but present in the courage and vision of the student body and faculty. 7 With this in mind, it seems proper and fitting that the Staff of the 1939 LAVIE has chosefrto portray the growth and change from the Old Penn State to the New Penn State in this, the 1939 edition.
