HMEMMWBEDD IGNALIZED by the $5,000,000 building program, the installation of new blood in the personnel, and a general spirit of hustle-bustle throughout this year the College has entered a new era. The suggestion of an official change of title from The Pennsylvania State College to The Pennsylvania State University and the installation of the Lambda Chapter of Pennsylvania of Phi Beta Kappa are two of the signihcant events which marked this year as a history-making one. However, they symbolize the spirit of optimism and progress which has been imbued in the College faculty and student body. With this trend has come a transition of the general student attitude from stodgy formality to the swift-moving informal pace of the year of 1938. New faces and plans for a more modern Penn State have brought about these changes. With these happenings in mind the Staff of the 1938 LA VIE has at- tempted to mold the hfty-first volume of LA VIE into an accurate record of the yearTs important events. The Staff sincerely hopes the Class will be pleased With this effort and in future years will be reminded of many happy undergraduate days by the sight of this 1938 official class pyblicae tion.

hEEDUCGWWN EANS Marion R. Trabue, Carl P. Schott, and Harry P. Hammond are new at Penn State, but already their knowledge, wisdom, and friendly spirit have become recognized. Not only in their respective Schools of Education, Physical Education, and Engineering are their talents appreciated. The entire student body knows them as worthy scholars and regular good fellowsfl Thus, the Staff of the 1938 LA VIE dedicates this fifty-first volume to three men who have so capably fitted into the Penn State plan of doing things quietly but well. By the same token that this book is dedicated to the three new deans also it is dedicated to Penn State,s progress, for they are part of the Col- legels future. Their every movement or action which brings them new glory will be shared by the new Penn State.n Just as the proposed building pro- gram will create a new Penn State, so will the deans. With this book the Class of 1938 and the Stallc of the 1938 LA V11: wishes Deans Trabue, Schott, and Hammond the best of luck and many happy years in their new surroundings.
