W31'I1OCk began his associations with men on his father's Illinois farm, Walking behind his oWn plough and 'team of horses. Three years later, as a freshman at the University of Illinois, he came first in- to Contact with colleges. Hehas been in close touch with both ever since. During undergraduate years, he was editor of the college literary magazine, a mem- ber of the senior society, and a high scholar. . . he has a Phi Beta Kappa key. He ma- -jored in law and English, and Was admitted to the Illinois bar. In 1910 he joined Thomas Arkle Clark as assistant dean of men at his alma mater, and remained there nine years. In l9l9, prompted by an urge to investigate pioneer fields, he first came to Penn State as Dean of Men. Since that time he has combined the precepts of his former lead- er With a clear-sighted administrative talent of his own to render material service to the college. ' . - ' The improvement in fraternity organization at Penn State is largely a result of his influence, pledging and initiating have been made more rational, much of the sideshow has been eliminated from fraternity ceremonies. The dignity of local chapters can he attributed to his quiet work during the past twelve years. As a member of the Advisory Board on Athletics and of the Senate Committee on Athletics he has exerted himself toward the maintenance of high standards in inter- collegiate sports. His Work in the organization of non-fraternity men has been a factor in the development of intra-mural games. The Student Union was established under his guidance. ' - Alert, sagacious, sympathetic, he knows more students, and knows more about them, than even they realize. His office in Old Main is courtroom, sanctuary, and meet- ing-place in one. Above all, the cares of a trying position have not dulled his freshness of spirit, his zest for good fun. .
