HQ 7 l il' 1 1 'l 'J +I--.ll l l 'Gbe ,Alumni ,Association Elie Objects The preamble to the Constitution of the Alumni Association of The Pennsylvan'a State College states that the objects are a desire to continue the associations of College days, to promote fraternal feeling, to facilitate fraternal helpfulness and intercourse with each other and to promote the best interests of the College. Brief fllftstory The Alumni Association was formed July 28, 1870, in what was then called the Chemical Lecture Room, now Room 114, Main Building, and present Alumni Head- quarters. During the Hrst period of Penn State History or until 1870, little is recorded of Alumni activity, but after that, marking the second period, and until the reorganiza- tion in 1910, the foundations for the present Alumni program were laid. Alumni repre- sentation on the Board of Trustees was granted i11 1876, ln 1881 changes in the College curriculum recommended by the Association were adopted. In 1896, the Association for the first time conducted, in co-operation with the Board of Trustees, a campaign for proper state financial aid to the College. In this period, also, branch associations were formed, Alumni records compiled and publications issued while the Commencement Class 1'eunions and Alumni Day.in June were developed. The third period, from 1910 to the present time has seen development of Alumni activity corresponding to the growth of the College. The first salaried secretary was employed in June. 1910, with a permanent ofiice a11d since then the Association has made rapid strides. Records have been perfected a11d publications issued i11 increasing number, which, coupled with the activity of the various branch associations has enabled the Alumni to be kept more intimately in touch with Penn State 1natters. The Booster Campaign, started in 1915, was progressing finely whe11 the World NVar interrupted and broke down the field organization of the Association. During the war the Association continued operations by maintaining the best possible contacts with those who had entered the service. After the war the rebuilding process commenced, Zllld today the association has not only recovered, but has progressed in organization to a point 11ot before equalled. The branch associations are more strongly constructed than before, while in the state there is, in addition, the development of the County units as working forces for tl1e College. Specific 'Ilrojects 'lilumni On Yroarb of Erustees The Alumni Members of the Board of Trustees have been and are very important factors in the administration of the affairs of the College. There are nine Alumni mem- bers, three of whom are elected each year by the Alumni. Committees To co-operate with the College, whe11 particular matters arise, special alumni com- mittees are named for the work. Oneparticular instance of this is the Alumlli Athletic Advisory Committee, elected annually, which has performed notable service in placing athletics on a sound basis, Following the annual meeting on June 14,. 1921, and pursuant to a resolution adopted at that meeting, the officers appointed a special committee to meet with a similar com- ll l ..,,,,.1 t,-ir -an 5: H-f-T--1: ii-i li tx ll . ftitsi it 1 Wai. 1 15 11 .-mg li W ill e,u ,ii if gps. --:ii,fG'ifQ., W, ,li1,.,,i,3pgsF, Lfigmg ii, ,ji DJSXIWW ix: y, ,-, , , li ., e ,f,.,,,,i. a::tb...a,efEgigEZ.'l M-, its-.l..l'l:-.S:.sa., ?,u.ii2-aasii- ,,,,,' -will it.ei.r'n.xr?...u.L ..siQlfcs ,F , 15S,i:L,,aQ. lgS., 27
